What it actually does
Incorrect use of netdev_WARN() instead of netdev_warn() in udp_tunnel_nic_register() triggers full backtraces on expected runtime errors such as memory allocation failures.
Why it matters to the business
Produces misleading kernel logs that may increase noise for operators and complicate troubleshooting, though overall operational risk remains negligible.
How an attack unfolds
No exploitation path exists; the issue is strictly a logging-function choice that does not permit code execution, privilege escalation, or data exposure.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 087f1ed450dc6e7e49ffbbbe5b78be1218c6d5e0, which replaces the WARN call with the appropriate warn variant.
How to confirm the fix worked
Inspect udp_tunnel.c for the corrected netdev_warn() call and confirm that allocation-failure paths emit warnings without kernel backtraces or file/line information.
Typical attack path
- No attack path is possible because the condition is a non-security diagnostic change.
How to detect it
Because this is not an exploitable flaw, no post-exploitation artifacts exist; simply verify the presence of the corrected commit in running kernel sources or packages.
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced kernel commit via distribution updates at the next maintenance window.
- Review kernel log retention policies to ensure similar non-bug warnings do not trigger unnecessary alerts.
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: udp_tunnel: use netdev_warn() instead of netdev_WARN() netdev_WARN() uses WARN/WARN_ON to print a backtrace along with file and line information. In this case, udp_tunnel_nic_register() returning an error is just a failed operation, not a kernel bug. udp_tunnel_nic_register() can fail due to a memory allocation failure (kzalloc() or udp_tunnel_nic_alloc()). This is a normal runtime error and not a kernel bug. Replace netdev_WARN() with netdev_warn() accordingly.
