What it actually does

NULL pointer dereference in amdgpu odm_combine_segments_show when pipe_ctx->stream_res.tg is destroyed for an inactive connector, causing kernel oops on debugfs read.

Why it matters to the business

Systems with AMD GPUs running affected Linux kernels can experience unexpected crashes and reboots when debug information is accessed, leading to downtime and potential loss of work on graphics workloads; low exploit likelihood reduces immediate risk but patching remains necessary for stability.

How an attack unfolds

A local attacker with access to read debugfs triggers the flaw by accessing odm_combine_segments on an AMD GPU system where a connector is connected but inactive, dereferencing a null pointer and crashing the kernel; no remote or unauthenticated exploitation path exists and no threat actors are known to be using it.

How to fix it

Update the Linux kernel to commit d990c7f180aa7c6ffd2c1b3c77160e50672039ce or later; for packaged distributions apply docker-cli and docker-cli-doc updates to 27.5.1-r1 where applicable; disable or restrict access to the specific debugfs file until patched.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify kernel version contains the fix commit; attempt to read the debugfs entry on a system with an inactive connector and confirm no NULL dereference occurs; monitor kernel logs for absence of the associated oops signature.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local shell or user access on target Linux system
  2. Locate or enumerate AMD GPU debugfs entries under /sys/kernel/debug/dri
  3. Read odm_combine_segments file for an inactive connector
  4. Trigger NULL pointer dereference and kernel panic

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg for oops entries referencing odm_combine_segments_show and amdgpu; look for call traces involving seq_read_iter and full_proxy_read leading to the NULL dereference in the amdgpu module.

  • odm_combine_segments_show+0x93/0xf0 [amdgpu]
  • BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000000
  • RIP: 0010:odm_combine_segments_show

What your security team should do

  • Apply kernel updates containing d990c7f180aa7c6ffd2c1b3c77160e50672039ce immediately on AMD GPU systems
  • Restrict unprivileged access to /sys/kernel/debug until patches are deployed
  • Monitor EPSS and KEV status for any future increase in exploit activity

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/display: Fix NULL deref in debugfs odm_combine_segments When a connector is connected but inactive (e.g., disabled by desktop environments), pipe_ctx->stream_res.tg will be destroyed. Then, reading odm_combine_segments causes kernel NULL pointer dereference.
