What it actually does
NULL pointer dereference when cdns_pcie::ops is not populated by a Cadence glue driver during PCI initialization.
Why it matters to the business
Potential system crash or denial of service on affected Linux kernel configurations, increasing operational risk for cloud and enterprise workloads until patched.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access or the ability to trigger PCI device enumeration causes the kernel to dereference a NULL ops pointer, leading to a crash; no widespread remote exploitation observed.
How to fix it
Upgrade linux-azure on Ubuntu Pro 14.04 LTS to version 4.15.0-1162.177~14.04.1 or later; apply kernel updates promptly given the 315 days since publication.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel version matches or exceeds the fixed release; review dmesg or kernel logs for absence of the NULL dereference oops after upgrade.
Typical attack path
- Identify a system running an unpatched affected kernel with Cadence PCI controller
- Trigger PCI device initialization or enumeration that exercises the vulnerable code path
- Cause NULL pointer dereference resulting in kernel panic or oops
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for oops or panic messages referencing cdns_pcie or NULL pointer dereference in PCI cadence paths; correlate with device enumeration events.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all linux-azure 14.04 instances to the specified fixed version
- Monitor EPSS trend and kernel update channels for any increase in exploit maturity
- Limit exposure by restricting unprivileged local access on unpatched systems
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: PCI: cadence: Check for the existence of cdns_pcie::ops before using it cdns_pcie::ops might not be populated by all the Cadence glue drivers. This is going to be true for the upcoming Sophgo platform which doesn't set the ops. Hence, add a check to prevent NULL pointer dereference. [mani: reworded subject and description]
