What it actually does
The vulnerability lies in the `ParseAddress` function, which uses inefficient, repeated string concatenation to process domain-literal address components. An attacker can supply a specially crafted address with a very large domain-literal, causing the function to consume excessive CPU resources. This algorithmic complexity flaw leads to resource exhaustion and a denial of service (DoS) condition, rendering the affected application or server unresponsive.
Why it matters to the business
An attacker can make your services unavailable to legitimate users, disrupting business operations. This denial of service can lead to reputational damage, customer dissatisfaction, and potential financial loss, especially for critical applications that process external inputs like emails or API requests. Since the attack is simple and requires no authentication, the risk of disruption is heightened.
How an attack unfolds
An unauthenticated remote attacker crafts a request containing an address with an abnormally large domain-literal component (e.g., an email address like 'user@[a_very_long_string]'). They send this request to a public-facing service that utilizes the vulnerable `ParseAddress` function. Upon receiving the malicious data, the application attempts to parse it, triggering the inefficient string concatenation logic. This causes the process's CPU usage to spike to 100%, starving all other legitimate processes and effectively crashing the application or the entire host until the process is terminated or the system is rebooted.
How to fix it
The primary remediation is to upgrade the affected software or library to a patched version where the `ParseAddress` function has been updated to use an efficient string-building mechanism (e.g., a StringBuilder or pre-allocation). If an immediate upgrade is not feasible, consider implementing a temporary mitigation by using a Web Application Firewall (WAF) or input validation layer to enforce a strict length limit on address fields, rejecting any requests with abnormally long domain-literal components before they reach the vulnerable code.
How to confirm the fix worked
To validate the fix, confirm that all instances of the affected software have been upgraded to a patched version by checking the installed package versions. To test for the vulnerability's presence on a non-production system, send a request containing an address with a large domain-literal and monitor the system's CPU usage. A vulnerable system will exhibit a sustained CPU spike to near 100%, while a patched system will handle the request without significant performance degradation.
Typical attack path
- The attacker identifies a publicly accessible endpoint (e.g., mail server, web application, API) that uses the vulnerable address parsing library.
- The attacker crafts a request containing an address with an extremely large domain-literal component.
- The attacker sends the malicious request to the target service.
- The service attempts to parse the malformed address, triggering the algorithmic complexity bug.
- The server's CPU usage spikes to 100%, causing a denial of service for all users of the application.
How to detect it
To detect potential exploitation, monitor application and server performance metrics for sustained periods of high CPU utilization (90-100%). Correlate these CPU spikes with inbound traffic logs (e.g., web server access logs, mail server logs, API gateway logs). Search these logs for requests containing unusually long strings in fields intended for addresses, particularly focusing on data within domain-literals (e.g., content inside square brackets `[]` following an `@` symbol).
What your security team should do
- Immediately patch all systems running the vulnerable component, as this is a high-severity, low-complexity denial of service vulnerability.
- If patching is delayed, deploy rate-limiting and input validation rules on edge devices (e.g., WAF, API gateway) to block requests with excessively long address fields.
- Configure monitoring and alerting for sustained high CPU utilization on relevant application servers to detect potential exploitation attempts.
The record
The ParseAddress function constructs domain-literal address components through repeated string concatenation. When parsing large domain-literal components, this can cause excessive CPU consumption.
