What it actually does
Deserialization of untrusted data allows an attacker to supply a malicious serialized object that, when deserialized by the server, results in arbitrary code execution with no user interaction required.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can fully compromise the Adobe Experience Manager server, leading to data theft, service disruption, or use as a foothold for further network attacks; high EPSS and weaponized exploit maturity increase urgency for remediation.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malicious serialized payload and sends it directly to an exposed deserialization endpoint in Adobe Experience Manager; because the input is not validated or sanitized, the server deserializes the object and executes attacker-controlled code, achieving remote code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade Adobe Experience Manager to a version newer than 6.5.23.0; apply all vendor security updates promptly and disable or restrict any unnecessary deserialization functionality.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed version is newer than 6.5.23.0; review release notes for the specific fix addressing the deserialization issue and test that untrusted input no longer results in code execution.
Typical attack path
- Identify exposed Adobe Experience Manager instances
- Craft or obtain a weaponized deserialization payload targeting the vulnerable code path
- Send the payload to the affected endpoint without requiring authentication or user interaction
- Achieve arbitrary code execution on the server
How to detect it
Search server and application logs for unexpected deserialization events or error patterns around the vulnerable component; monitor for new processes or network connections spawned immediately after inbound requests to management endpoints.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all instances of Adobe Experience Manager within the next 30 days due to weaponized exploit maturity and rising EPSS
- Implement network controls to restrict access to management interfaces from untrusted networks
- Enable logging of deserialization operations for future detection efforts
The record
Adobe Experience Manager (MS) versions 6.5.23.0 and earlier are affected by a Deserialization of Untrusted Data vulnerability that could lead to arbitrary code execution by an attacker. Exploitation of this issue does not require user interaction. Scope is unchanged.
