What it actually does
Integer underflow in setDeferredReply allows prev->size - prev->used to underflow, corrupting memory structures during reply handling in networking code.
Why it matters to the business
Affected services may crash or become unstable, leading to temporary loss of availability for dependent applications and increased operational overhead for restarts and monitoring.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker on the adjacent network sends crafted network traffic that reaches setDeferredReply with values causing the size calculation to underflow, resulting in memory corruption and potential denial of service.
How to fix it
Upgrade the affected package to one of the listed fixed versions such as 237-3ubuntu10.56; apply the update through standard package management and restart affected services.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed package version is at or above the fixed release, review release notes for the integer underflow fix, and perform functional testing of network reply paths under load.
Typical attack path
- Locate an exposed instance of the vulnerable networking component
- Send specially constructed packets designed to trigger the size underflow
- Trigger the integer underflow during reply buffer processing
- Induce memory corruption leading to service instability or crash
How to detect it
Review service logs and crash dumps for unexpected terminations or buffer handling errors during reply processing; correlate with network connection attempts from untrusted sources.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching systems reachable from untrusted networks
- Implement network segmentation to limit exposure of the service
- Enable enhanced logging for networking components to detect anomalies
- Schedule periodic version audits to prevent regression to vulnerable releases
The record
setDeferredReply in networking.c in Valkey through 8.1.1 has an integer underflow for prev->size - prev->used.
