What it actually does
Out-of-bounds read in fbdev bit_putcs_aligned/unaligned functions where a glyph index derived from masked character values exceeds the actual font glyph count, allowing reads past the end of the built-in font array.
Why it matters to the business
Exposure on older Ubuntu systems running kde4libs packages can lead to kernel memory corruption risks, potential crashes in graphics rendering, or information leaks, with remediation deadlines passed and low but persistent exploit probability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies crafted console or framebuffer input that triggers bit_putcs functions with character values producing an out-of-range glyph index, causing the kernel to read beyond allocated font data structures without any named threat actors observed exploiting this issue.
How to fix it
Upgrade kde4libs on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS to 4:4.14.16-0ubuntu3.3, on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS to 4:4.14.38-0ubuntu3.1, and on Ubuntu Pro 14.04 LTS to 4:4.13.3-0ubuntu0.5+esm1; apply kernel updates addressing fbdev bitblit if available.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed kde4libs package versions match the listed fixed releases; confirm absence of the vulnerable bit_putcs glyph index calculation via source inspection or kernel symbol checks.
Typical attack path
- Identify systems exposing framebuffer or console interfaces via kde4libs graphics stack
- Craft input causing bit_putcs_aligned or unaligned to compute glyph pointer from 0xff/0x1ff masked value
- Trigger rendering path that dereferences index beyond actual glyph array bounds
- Observe resulting kernel OOB read for memory disclosure or crash
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for fbdev or bitblit related oops/panic messages indicating glyph index faults; examine console rendering activity preceding any memory corruption events.
What your security team should do
- Immediately patch affected kde4libs packages to the exact fixed versions provided for each Ubuntu release
- Monitor EPSS and kernel changelogs for any future exploit maturity increase
- Restrict untrusted access to framebuffer/console interfaces until patched
- Audit systems for legacy kde4libs deployments given 322 days since publication
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: fbdev: bitblit: bound-check glyph index in bit_putcs* bit_putcs_aligned()/unaligned() derived the glyph pointer from the character value masked by 0xff/0x1ff, which may exceed the actual font's glyph count and read past the end of the built-in font array. Clamp the index to the actual glyph count before computing the address. This fixes a global out-of-bounds read reported by syzbot.
