What it actually does

Incorrect bus_context pointer passed to __devm_regmap_init_slimbus and __regmap_init_slimbus causes invalid memory dereference during slimbus regmap read/write operations, resulting in kernel paging faults.

Why it matters to the business

Systems using affected Linux kernels with slimbus audio codecs may experience unexpected crashes during audio playback or device initialization, leading to downtime on embedded or mobile platforms.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access triggers audio hardware parameter configuration on affected slimbus devices; the faulty regmap path dereferences an invalid pointer, causing kernel panic or potential memory corruption that could be leveraged for further exploitation.

How to fix it

Update to Linux kernel commit c0f05129e5734ff3fd14b2c242709314d9ca5433 or later stable releases that contain the corrected pointer arguments in both devm and non-devm slimbus regmap init functions.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the presence of the fix commit in the running kernel source; test audio playback on affected hardware such as Dragonboard 845c to ensure no paging faults occur during regmap operations.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local shell or trigger audio subsystem via user-space application
  2. Invoke snd_pcm_hw_params or equivalent ioctl on slimbus-backed codec
  3. Regmap layer calls into slimbus read/write with wrong context pointer
  4. Kernel dereferences invalid address leading to paging fault

How to detect it

Review kernel logs for paging request faults originating from slim_xfer_msg, regmap_slimbus_read, or wcd934x_hw_params call stacks on slimbus-enabled hardware.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel upgrade on all systems using slimbus regmap
  • Monitor for kernel oops or paging request logs involving regmap_slimbus
  • Restrict unprivileged access to audio devices until patched

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: regmap: slimbus: fix bus_context pointer in regmap init calls Commit 4e65bda8273c ("ASoC: wcd934x: fix error handling in wcd934x_codec_parse_data()") revealed the problem in the slimbus regmap. It should be just "slimbus" (which is equal to &slimbus->dev). Correct it. The wcd934x codec seems to be the only or the first user of devm_regmap_init_slimbus() but we should fix it till the point where __devm_regmap_init_slimbus() was introduced therefore two "Fixes" tags. While at this, also correct the same argument in __regmap_init_slimbus().
