What it actually does
Use-after-free in Bluetooth HCI connection synchronization code where a pending connection object (state BT_OPEN) is freed before command submission completes in hci_acl_create_conn_sync and hci_le_create_conn_sync.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel instability or potential privilege escalation on Linux systems with Bluetooth enabled, impacting device reliability and multi-tenant server security; low urgency due to absence from known exploited vulnerabilities lists.
How an attack unfolds
A local attacker triggers Bluetooth pairing or connection management commands that allocate connection objects; asynchronous worker threads then access the objects after they have been freed via connection cleanup events, resulting in the use-after-free condition.
How to fix it
Apply kernel updates containing commit 6243bda271a628c48875e3e473206e7f584892ce; for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12 SP1-LTSS and SAP Applications 12 SP1 apply kgraft-patch-SLE12-SP1_Update_20 version 10-2.1 or later.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm presence of the fix commit in the running kernel source or package version; exercise Bluetooth connection establishment under memory pressure while monitoring for KASAN reports in hci_sync.c.
Typical attack path
- Local process sends HCI management command to initiate ACL or LE connection
- Connection object allocated in hci_conn_add_unset path
- Connection state transitions and cleanup frees the object via hci_conn_del
- hci_cmd_sync_work or hci_acl_create_conn_sync accesses freed memory
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and KASAN reports for slab-use-after-free mentions involving hci_acl_create_conn_sync, hci_le_create_conn_sync, or hci_cmd_sync_work; correlate with Bluetooth management socket activity.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all Bluetooth-enabled Linux hosts
- Disable Bluetooth kernel modules where the functionality is unnecessary
- Include hci_sync and hci_conn functions in kernel crash and sanitizer log monitoring
