What it actually does
Missing error handling for add_interval() inside do_validate_mem() allows invalid PCMCIA memory window parameters to be processed without validation, leading to improper input validation in the Linux kernel pcmcia subsystem.
Why it matters to the business
Organizations running affected Linux kernels face potential system instability or crashes during PCMCIA hardware interactions; high ecosystem prevalence of the Linux kernel increases the number of systems that must be updated despite low observed exploitation rates.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access supplies crafted PCMCIA memory configuration data that triggers a failure path in add_interval(); without error checking the kernel continues with invalid state, which may be leveraged for denial of service or further local privilege escalation attempts.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to commit 5b60ed401b47897352c520bc724c85aa908dedcc or later; apply the vendor-supplied package update that includes this fix for the affected stable tree.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains commit 5b60ed401b47897352c520bc724c85aa908dedcc; inspect source for proper error checking around add_interval() calls in do_validate_mem() and confirm PCMCIA memory validation succeeds on test hardware.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access to a system with PCMCIA support enabled
- Trigger PCMCIA memory window validation via user-space interface or hardware emulation
- Supply malformed interval data that causes add_interval() to fail
- Observe or exploit resulting kernel state corruption or crash
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for unexpected failures or warnings originating from pcmcia memory validation routines; correlate with process activity attempting to configure PCMCIA resources; no public indicators of prior exploitation exist for this issue.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates to the fixed commit on all systems exposing PCMCIA interfaces
- Monitor EPSS trend and threat actor activity for any increase in targeting of this class of kernel validation flaws
- Restrict unprivileged local access where PCMCIA hardware is present until patches are deployed
