What it actually does

The flaw permits an out-of-bounds write through a dynptr object passed to bpf_crypto_crypt, corrupting adjacent kernel memory structures.

Why it matters to the business

Unpatched Linux systems risk kernel crashes, denial of service, or local privilege escalation that could compromise the entire host and any workloads running on it.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker loads a malicious BPF program that supplies a malformed dynptr to the bpf_crypto_crypt helper, triggering the out-of-bounds write and potentially gaining arbitrary kernel read/write primitives.

How to fix it

Apply the upstream fix by updating the kernel to include commit 0126358df12d6f476f79251d9c398ac5c1b3062d or later; rebuild and deploy the patched kernel across all affected distributions.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the running kernel contains commit 0126358df12d6f476f79251d9c398ac5c1b3062d via git log or uname -r against the fixed release; recompile BPF programs and test crypto-related helpers for stability.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain unprivileged local access or ability to load BPF programs
  2. Craft and load a BPF program that invokes bpf_crypto_crypt with an oversized or misaligned dynptr
  3. Trigger the helper to perform the out-of-bounds write
  4. Leverage resulting memory corruption for privilege escalation or container escape

How to detect it

Inspect kernel logs for oops/panic messages referencing bpf_crypto_crypt or dynptr; review audit logs for unexpected BPF program loads; correlate with process creation of bpftool or similar utilities.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately schedule kernel updates containing the referenced commit for all production systems
  • Restrict unprivileged BPF program loading via sysctl kernel.unprivileged_bpf_disabled=1 until patched
  • Monitor for kernel oops or panic logs related to bpf_crypto_crypt
  • Audit systems for custom BPF programs that call crypto helpers
