What it actually does
Use-after-free in nbd_genl_connect error path after nbd_start_device allows recv_work to access freed nbd->config, resulting in slab-use-after-free writes in the kernel workqueue.
Why it matters to the business
Systems relying on network block devices face kernel instability or crashes that can interrupt storage operations and require reboots; unpatched kernels remain exposed for months after disclosure.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers specific error conditions during nbd_genl_connect after device start, leaving the receive workqueue running against a freed config structure and causing memory corruption.
How to fix it
Upgrade the linux package on Debian 12 to version 6.1.147-1 or newer; apply the upstream patch that moves nbd_start_device after backend file creation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify running kernel contains the fix by checking package version or presence of the nbd_genl_connect ordering change; monitor for absence of KASAN reports matching recv_work on nbd devices.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access or trigger nbd connection setup
- Force nbd_genl_connect into an error path after nbd_start_device succeeds
- Allow recv_work to dereference the already-put config pointer
- Achieve memory corruption leading to crash or escalation
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and KASAN reports for recv_work slab-use-after-free on nbd devices, block nbd messages about receive control failure, and workqueue activity on nbd-recv.
- BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in recv_work+0x694/0xa80 drivers/block/nbd.c:1022
- block nbd6: Receive control failed (result -104)
- block nbd6: shutting down sockets
- Workqueue: nbd6-recv recv_work
What your security team should do
- Apply the 6.1.147-1 update immediately on all Debian 12 systems exposing NBD
- Disable NBD modules where not required until patched
- Monitor kernel logs for nbd-related KASAN or slab-use-after-free messages

This causes the error path to put nbd->config while recv_work continue to use the config after putting it, leading to use-after-free in recv_work. This patch moves nbd_start_device() after the backend file creation.
