Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A flaw in the Linux kernel's safety checker for certain low-level programs could let attackers run code that breaks core system protections and takes over the machine.

What it actually does

The BPF verifier incorrectly excludes the stack pointer register from precision backtracking bookkeeping, allowing invalid register state propagation past safety checks and triggering a backtracking warning that can result in acceptance of unsafe programs capable of kernel memory corruption.

Why it matters to the business

Systems running affected Linux kernels face elevated risk of local privilege escalation or denial of service through crafted eBPF programs; high downstream prevalence in distributions amplifies exposure across servers, containers, and endpoints, with remediation deadlines adding operational urgency.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker compiles and loads a malicious BPF program containing crafted conditional jumps involving r10 that trigger the precision backtracking flaw; the verifier fails to properly mark precision on the stack pointer, accepts the program, and the resulting unsafe execution can be chained by named threat actors for privilege escalation.

How to fix it

Upgrade to fixed kernel versions: linux-lts (Alpaquita:stream) 6.6.58-r0, linux-lts (Alpaquita:23) 6.1.62-r0, or mainline commit 4265682c29c92f52c0da6fad5a79b5801462c8de; rebuild and redeploy any custom BPF programs after patching; disable untrusted BPF loading via kernel.unprivileged_bpf_disabled where feasible.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the patch is applied by checking kernel version or git commit; run the provided test case from the commit to ensure the verifier warning no longer triggers; verify BPF program loading succeeds only for safe programs.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a target system with a vulnerable kernel and eBPF loading capability
  2. Craft a BPF program using specific register comparisons against r10 to exercise the backtracking path
  3. Load the program via bpf() syscall or a user-space loader
  4. Trigger the verifier bug to bypass precision checks
  5. Execute the accepted program to corrupt memory or escalate privileges

How to detect it

Search kernel logs for "verifier backtracking bug" or the exact WARN_ONCE message from __mark_chain_precision; inspect audit logs for unusual bpf() syscalls from non-root users; correlate with threat actor campaigns targeting Linux kernel privilege escalation.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching all production kernels within the CISA-style remediation window
  • Audit systems for eBPF usage and restrict loading to signed or privileged programs only
  • Monitor for verifier warnings in dmesg and kernel logs
  • Update threat intelligence feeds to track exploitation of this and related kernel CVEs
