What it actually does

Use-after-free in Bluetooth MGMT subsystem (mgmt_remove_adv_monitor_complete) caused by pending command structures freed during mgmt_index_removed while still referenced by hci_cmd_sync_work, enabling slab reuse and kernel memory corruption.

Why it matters to the business

Linux systems with Bluetooth enabled face risk of kernel crashes, denial of service, or potential local privilege escalation; high ecosystem prevalence in servers, desktops, and embedded devices amplifies exposure across fleets.

How an attack unfolds

Attacker opens an HCI socket, issues MGMT_OP_REMOVE_ADV_MONITOR commands that allocate pending entries, then triggers socket bind or index removal paths that free those entries; subsequent hci_cmd_sync_work execution dereferences the freed structure, allowing memory corruption or control-flow hijack. Listed threat actors have targeted similar Linux kernel privilege-escalation flaws.

How to fix it

Upgrade Linux kernel to commit 3c9aba9cbdf163e2654be9f82d43ff8a04273962 or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel. For yq packages apply 4.45.4-r1 or newer. Disable Bluetooth kernel modules if not required.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm kernel source contains the referenced commit or version string; run syzkaller-style reproducers targeting mgmt_remove_adv_monitor_complete; verify absence of KASAN reports on the affected code path.

Typical attack path

  1. Open raw HCI socket and bind to Bluetooth interface
  2. Send MGMT_OP_REMOVE_ADV_MONITOR management command
  3. Trigger mgmt_index_removed or hci_sock_bind to free pending structures
  4. Cause hci_cmd_sync_work to invoke the dangling complete handler
  5. Read or write through freed slab object to corrupt kernel state

How to detect it

Search kernel logs for KASAN reports referencing mgmt_remove_adv_monitor_complete or hci_cmd_sync_work; inspect audit logs for unusual HCI socket binds followed by management command sequences; correlate with process creation of kworker/u threads handling Bluetooth workqueues.

What your security team should do

  • Apply kernel updates immediately on all Bluetooth-enabled systems
  • Prioritize patching servers and endpoints listed in KEV-adjacent campaigns
  • Disable unused Bluetooth interfaces via modprobe blacklist
  • Monitor for new EPSS increases and threat-actor activity on related kernel CVEs
