What it actually does

Null pointer dereference in idpf_features_check when vport pointer is NULL during device reset, triggered while validating TX packet header length against cached adapter value.

Why it matters to the business

Unexpected system crashes and reboots on Linux hosts using the idpf network driver, leading to service interruption and potential loss of in-flight network data.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local or network access generates TX traffic that reaches validate_xmit_skb while a concurrent reset releases vports; the NULL vport dereference crashes the kernel.

How to fix it

Upgrade to a kernel containing commit f6f5e9c8cb680c3cb9771fd9fa114319cbc4f514 or later; Mageia users should install kernel-linus 4.1.15-1.mga5 or newer. Reboot after installation.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the presence of the fix commit in the running kernel source or package; test by inducing adapter resets while generating TX traffic and verify absence of page_fault_oops in idpf_features_check.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local execution or network adjacency to target host
  2. Trigger or wait for idpf adapter reset (e.g., via link flap or admin action)
  3. Send or induce TX packets that invoke idpf_features_check during the reset window
  4. Cause kernel NULL pointer dereference and system crash

How to detect it

Review kernel logs for page_fault_oops referencing idpf_features_check and asm_exc_page_fault during reset-related call traces; correlate with netdev reset events.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on all systems exposing the idpf driver
  • Schedule reboots during maintenance windows after applying fixed packages
  • Monitor vendor advisories for additional stable backports

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: idpf: fix null-ptr-deref in idpf_features_check idpf_features_check is used to validate the TX packet. skb header length is compared with the hardware supported value received from the device control plane. The value is stored in the adapter structure and to access it, vport pointer is used. During reset all the vports are released and the vport pointer that the netdev private structure points to is NULL. To avoid null-ptr-deref, store the max header length value in netdev private structure. This also helps to cache the value and avoid accessing adapter pointer in hot path.
