What it actually does
Improper input validation in the Linux bonding driver permits changing to an XDP-unsupported bond mode while an XDP program remains attached, resulting in a kernel warning during dev_xdp_uninstall on namespace deletion.
Why it matters to the business
Network configuration changes on systems using bonding with XDP can trigger kernel warnings and instability, increasing operational risk in containerized or virtualized environments; low exploitability but relevant for kernel stability on affected Red Hat systems.
How an attack unfolds
A local attacker creates a network namespace, adds a bonding device in balance-rr mode, attaches an XDP program, switches the mode to broadcast (unsupported for native XDP), then deletes the namespace to invoke bond_net_exit_batch_rtnl and trigger the unregister_netdevice_many_notify warning.
How to fix it
Apply kernel updates that add an XDP program check in bond mode changes; for listed Red Hat packages update to the exact fixed versions such as postgresql-server 0:12.22-1.module+el8.4.0+22583+29030e83 and pgaudit 0:1.4.0-6.module+el8.4.0+11288+c193d6d7.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm updated package versions match the fixed module releases; reproduce the bond mode change sequence after XDP attachment and verify no warning is emitted in dmesg or kernel logs.
Typical attack path
- Create network namespace with ip netns
- Add bonding device in XDP-compatible mode
- Attach XDP program via ip link set
- Change bond mode to unsupported type
- Delete namespace to trigger device unregistration
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for warnings from unregister_netdevice_many_notify combined with bond_net_exit_batch_rtnl or bond_xdp_set calls during netns cleanup; correlate with bonding interface creation events.
- WARNING: CPU:.* at net/core/dev.c:9912 unregister_netdevice_many_notify

- unregister_netdevice_many_notify+0x8d9/0x930
What your security team should do
- Apply the specified package updates immediately on systems using bonding and XDP
- Audit network configurations that combine bonding modes with XDP programs
- Monitor kernel logs for similar dev.c warnings during namespace operations
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bonding: check xdp prog when set bond mode Following operations can trigger a warning[1]: ip netns add ns1 ip netns exec ns1 ip link add bond0 type bond mode balance-rr ip netns exec ns1 ip link set dev bond0 xdp obj af_xdp_kern.o sec xdp ip netns exec ns1 ip link set bond0 type bond mode broadcast ip netns del ns1 When delete the namespace, dev_xdp_uninstall() is called to remove xdp program on bond dev, and bond_xdp_set() will check the bond mode. If bond mode is changed after attaching xdp program, the warning may occur. Some bond modes (broadcast, etc.) do not support native xdp. Set bond mode with xdp program attached is not good. Add check for xdp program when set bond mode.
