What it actually does

Kernel panic triggered in btnxpuart driver during firmware release when WLAN and BT FW downloads occur simultaneously; HW bug results in single bootloader signature, skipped FW request, 60-second timeout, and invalid pointer dereference inside release_firmware spinlock.

Why it matters to the business

Unexpected system crashes on devices using this Bluetooth driver during wireless firmware operations, causing service interruption and requiring reboots in embedded or Linux-based deployments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker or stress-test scenario forces concurrent WLAN and Bluetooth firmware downloads; the chip sends only one bootloader signature due to a hardware bug, the driver enters download mode without requesting the file, the 60-second timeout fires, and release_firmware dereferences a corrupted pointer leading to panic.

How to fix it

Apply the kernel patch that resolves the btnxpuart FW release panic; for listed Red Hat postgresql packages update to version 0:13.18-1.el9_5 or later equivalent kernel packages containing the fix.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the updated kernel or package is installed, reproduce the simultaneous WLAN/BT FW download stress test, and verify absence of the paging request oops and release_firmware call trace.

Typical attack path

  1. Trigger simultaneous WLAN and BT firmware download operations
  2. Exploit hardware condition that emits only a single bootloader signature
  3. Driver enters FW download mode without a valid file request
  4. FW download timer expires after 60 seconds
  5. release_firmware called on invalid state causing kernel oops

How to detect it

Search kernel logs for the exact oops signature containing 0000312e6f006573, release_firmware, and nxp_setup in btnxpuart; inspect dmesg and syslog for hci_dev_open_sync failures around Bluetooth firmware timeouts.

  • Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 0000312e6f006573
  • release_firmware+0x48/0x6c
  • nxp_setup+0x3c4/0x540 [btnxpuart]
  • btnxpuart(O) pciexxx(O) mlan(O)

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel updates on all systems exposing Bluetooth via btnxpuart
  • Monitor for kernel oops logs containing release_firmware and _raw_spin_lock
  • Disable unnecessary Bluetooth interfaces until patched

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Bluetooth: btnxpuart: Fix kernel panic during FW release This fixes a kernel panic seen during release FW in a stress test scenario where WLAN and BT FW download occurs simultaneously, and due to a HW bug, chip sends out only 1 bootloader signatures. When driver receives the bootloader signature, it enters FW download mode, but since no consequtive bootloader signatures seen, FW file is not requested. After 60 seconds, when FW download times out, release_firmware causes a kernel panic.
