What it actually does

NULL pointer dereference in dmub_hw_lock_mgr_cmd when ctx->dmub_srv is NULL on ASICs without DMUB support but should_use_dmub_lock returns true, triggered during display plane/cursor updates in the AMD display driver.

Why it matters to the business

Kernel crash and system instability on affected AMD hardware during graphics operations, leading to downtime and potential loss of unsaved work; high urgency due to 560 days of exposure and widespread Linux kernel deployment.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local access triggers display operations such as cursor attribute updates or atomic commits on an AMD GPU without DMUB support, causing the kernel to dereference a NULL dmub_srv pointer inside dmub_hw_lock_mgr_cmd and resulting in an oops.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to version 6.1.134 or later; for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.4 EUS apply the listed fixed module versions for postgresql and related packages where applicable.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify running kernel version is at least 6.1.134; reproduce display operations and confirm absence of the NULL dereference oops in dmesg; check for the added dmub_srv NULL check in should_use_dmub_lock.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local user access on a vulnerable Linux system with AMD display hardware lacking DMUB support
  2. Perform graphics operations that invoke drm_mode_cursor_ioctl or atomic plane commits
  3. Reach commit_planes_for_stream and dcn10_cursor_lock which call dmub_hw_lock_mgr_cmd
  4. Trigger should_use_dmub_lock returning true while dmub_srv remains NULL
  5. Cause kernel NULL pointer dereference and system crash

How to detect it

Search kernel logs and dmesg for BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference combined with RIP referencing dmub_hw_lock_mgr_cmd and call traces containing dcn10_cursor_lock or amdgpu_dm_atomic_commit_tail; look for crashes on Morphius or similar AMD hardware.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately update all affected systems to the fixed kernel version 6.1.134
  • Prioritize patching systems with AMD GPUs that may lack DMUB support
  • Monitor for kernel oops reports matching dmub_hw_lock_mgr_cmd in production workloads
  • Review and test graphics/display workloads after patching to ensure stability

The record

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/amd/display: avoid NPD when ASIC does not support DMUB ctx->dmub_srv will de NULL if the ASIC does not support DMUB, which is tested in dm_dmub_sw_init. However, it will be dereferenced in dmub_hw_lock_mgr_cmd if should_use_dmub_lock returns true. This has been the case since dmub support has been added for PSR1. Fix this by checking for dmub_srv in should_use_dmub_lock.
