What it actually does
Improper error handling after xa_alloc_cyclic() returns a positive value on wraparound causes ERR_PTR(1) to be treated as a valid pointer, leading to dereference of an unallocated pin structure and potential memory corruption.
Why it matters to the business
Systems running affected Red Hat Satellite and Foreman packages on Linux kernels face risk of crashes or local privilege escalation; widespread deployment in enterprise management environments increases operational disruption potential despite low observed exploitation.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers the dpll subsystem code path that calls xa_alloc_cyclic(), forcing a wraparound return value of 1; the missing negative-error check allows subsequent use of the invalid pointer, resulting in memory corruption that can be leveraged for privilege escalation similar to other recent Linux kernel flaws.
How to fix it
Update to fixed package versions: foreman 3.1.1.26-1.el7sat/el8sat, satellite 6.11.5-1.el7sat/el8sat, candlepin 4.1.19-1.el7sat/el8sat, tfm-rubygem-actionpack 6.0.6-2.el7sat/el8sat, tfm-rubygem-activerecord 6.0.6-2.el7sat/el8sat and equivalent rubygem packages; apply kernel updates addressing the dpll error handling once available.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed package versions match or exceed the listed fixed releases using rpm -q or satellite maintenance commands; confirm kernel dpll code contains the err < 0 check via source inspection or vendor advisory.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local user access on affected Linux system
- Trigger dpll xa_alloc_cyclic() allocation that wraps around
- Bypass IS_ERR() check due to positive error value
- Dereference unallocated pointer leading to corruption
- Escalate privileges or cause denial of service
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for dpll-related allocation failures or unexpected pointer dereference oops; correlate with process execution of dpll userspace tools or satellite management daemons; examine audit logs for anomalous local activity around the dpll subsystem.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching Satellite and Foreman components to the exact fixed versions provided
- Monitor for local privilege escalation attempts on Linux hosts running these packages
- Apply defense-in-depth with kernel hardening and least-privilege access until updates are complete
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dpll: fix xa_alloc_cyclic() error handling In case of returning 1 from xa_alloc_cyclic() (wrapping) ERR_PTR(1) will be returned, which will cause IS_ERR() to be false. Which can lead to dereference not allocated pointer (pin). Fix it by checking if err is lower than zero. This wasn't found in real usecase, only noticed. Credit to Pierre.
