What it actually does
NULL pointer dereference in btrfs scrub_find_fill_first_stripe when extent_root is absent due to corrupted extent tree on a rescue-mounted filesystem.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crash during routine filesystem maintenance on Linux systems using btrfs, leading to denial of service and potential data unavailability on affected servers or containers.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a crafted btrfs image lacking a valid extent root, mounts it using rescue options, then invokes the scrub ioctl to trigger the vulnerable path in find_first_extent_item causing the dereference.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix in commit 24b85a8b0310e0144da9ab30be42e87e6476638a or later kernel versions; for kernels older than 6.6 perform manual backport of the extent root validation check.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm presence of the extent-root validity check at the start of scrub_find_fill_first_stripe in the running kernel source or binary; test scrub on a rescue-mounted corrupted image and verify no NULL dereference occurs.
Typical attack path
- Obtain or craft a btrfs filesystem image with corrupted or missing extent tree root
- Mount the image using rescue=all,ro mount options
- Invoke btrfs scrub via ioctl or userspace tool on the mounted device
- scrub_find_fill_first_stripe dereferences the NULL extent root leading to kernel oops
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs and dmesg for Oops entries referencing find_first_extent_item, scrub_find_fill_first_stripe, and NULL pointer dereference during btrfs scrub; correlate with mount options containing rescue and prior btrfs corruption warnings.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates containing commit 24b85a8b0310 on all btrfs-using systems
- Disable automatic or scheduled scrub on potentially corrupted volumes until patched
- Monitor kernel logs for btrfs-related NULL pointer oops during scrub operations

Then it triggered a scrub, but since scrub relies on extent tree to find where the data/metadata extents are, scrub_find_fill_first_stripe() relies on an non-empty extent root. But unfortunately scrub_find_fill_first_stripe() doesn't really expect an NULL pointer for extent root, it use extent_root to grab fs_info and triggered a NULL pointer dereference. [FIX] Add an extra check for a valid extent root at the beginning of scrub_find_fill_first_stripe(). The new error path is introduced by 42437a6386ff ("btrfs: introduce mount option rescue=ignorebadroots"), but that's pretty old, and later commit b979547513ff ("btrfs: scrub: introduce helper to find and fill sector info for a scrub_stripe") changed how we do scrub. So for kernels older than 6.6, the fix will need manual backport.
