What it actually does
Use-after-free in ipvlan_get_iflink() when linkwatch workqueue accesses ipvlan->phy_dev after the lower device has been unregistered and freed, because ipvlan does not hold a reference count unlike vlan/macvlan.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crashes or potential privilege escalation on Linux systems using ipvlan interfaces, requiring urgent patching of affected kernels to prevent denial of service or compromise in network-heavy environments.
How an attack unfolds
Attacker creates an ipvlan device over a lower interface, triggers unregistration of the lower device, then causes a linkwatch event that schedules work which calls into ipvlan_get_iflink on the now-freed phy_dev pointer.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit ba9f7c16ec879c83bb4f80406773a911aace8267 or later; apply equivalent RCU protection changes in net/core/link_watch.c and ensure ipvlan holds lower device refcount in ndo_init/priv_destructor.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel source contains the referenced commit or test with KASAN-enabled builds confirming absence of slab-use-after-free reports in ipvlan_get_iflink during device teardown and linkwatch processing.
Typical attack path
- Instantiate ipvlan netdevice over a lower interface
- Unregister or free the lower device while ipvlan remains active
- Trigger linkwatch event via device state changes
- Workqueue executes default_operstate which calls ipvlan_get_iflink on freed memory
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for KASAN slab-use-after-free reports citing ipvlan_get_iflink, linkwatch_event, or default_operstate during device unregistration; examine workqueue activity involving kworker and netdevice teardown.

- BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in ipvlan_get_iflink
- linkwatch_event
- default_operstate net/core/link_watch.c
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems exposing ipvlan devices
- Review and restrict use of ipvlan where possible until patched
- Enable KASAN or similar memory debugging in test environments to validate fixes
- Monitor kernel logs for linkwatch and ipvlan-related oops
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ipvlan: Fix use-after-free in ipvlan_get_iflink(). syzbot presented an use-after-free report [0] regarding ipvlan and linkwatch. ipvlan does not hold a refcnt of the lower device unlike vlan and macvlan. If the linkwatch work is triggered for the ipvlan dev, the lower dev might have already been freed, resulting in UAF of ipvlan->phy_dev in ipvlan_get_iflink(). We can delay the lower dev unregistration like vlan and macvlan by holding the lower dev's refcnt in dev->netdev_ops->ndo_init() and releasing it in dev->priv_destructor(). Jakub pointed out calling .ndo_XXX after unregister_netdevice() has returned is error prone and suggested [1] addressing this UAF in the core by taking commit 750e51603395 ("net: avoid potential UAF in default_operstate()") further. Let's assume unregistering devices DOWN and use RCU protection in default_operstate() not to race with the device unregistration.
