What it actually does
The flaw causes a stack-based buffer overflow in ff_aac_search_for_tns within libavcodec/aacenc_tns.c of the AAC Encoder when processing manipulated input.
Why it matters to the business
Systems handling untrusted media files risk crashes or remote code execution, potentially disrupting media workflows or allowing full system compromise; low exploit likelihood reduces immediate urgency despite public disclosure.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies specially crafted AAC data to the vulnerable encoder function over a remote channel; the overflow allows control of execution flow, and publicly available exploit code may be adapted by threat actors.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected FFmpeg installations beyond version 7.1; for listed packages apply the 2.6.0 fixed release where dependencies exist.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm FFmpeg version is newer than 7.1 and test AAC encoding with known-good inputs; review build logs or package manifests for the applied fixes.
Typical attack path
- Locate services using vulnerable FFmpeg for AAC encoding
- Prepare malicious AAC input designed to overflow the TNS search buffer
- Deliver the input remotely via file upload, streaming, or transcode request
- Trigger overflow to execute arbitrary code or cause denial of service
How to detect it
Review application logs for abnormal AAC encoding failures or crashes around the aacenc_tns module; inspect process dumps or network captures for unexpected buffer patterns in media handling.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching any FFmpeg instances used in media pipelines
- Monitor for public exploit usage given disclosure
- Restrict untrusted AAC input sources until upgrades complete
The record
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in FFmpeg up to 7.1. This affects the function ff_aac_search_for_tns of the file libavcodec/aacenc_tns.c of the component AAC Encoder. The manipulation leads to stack-based buffer overflow. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. The exploit has been disclosed to the public and may be used.
