A bug in Koji lets attackers trick the system into running harmful code in a user's browser when they click a specially made link, which could let the attacker see private information shown on the page.

What it actually does

Unsanitized user input allows reflected cross-site scripting where attacker-supplied JavaScript is echoed back into the rendered web page without proper escaping.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers could steal session tokens or sensitive data displayed to users, leading to unauthorized access to accounts or information leakage, though the flaw does not permit direct modification of data or system state.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious URL containing JavaScript payload and delivers it to a victim via phishing or other means; when the victim visits the link, the script executes in their browser within the Koji application context.

How to fix it

Apply input sanitization and output encoding on all reflected parameters; update to the latest Koji release once a patch addressing this reflection issue is available.

How to confirm the fix worked

Review source code or run automated scanners for reflected input paths; test previously vulnerable endpoints with benign payloads to confirm they no longer execute script; monitor release notes for the specific fix version.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker identifies a Koji endpoint that reflects unsanitized input parameters.
  2. Attacker embeds a JavaScript payload in the URL query string or path.
  3. Attacker distributes the crafted link to target users.
  4. Victim clicks the link and the browser renders the page executing the injected script.
  5. Script performs actions such as exfiltrating cookies or displayed data.

How to detect it

Inspect web server and application logs for requests containing suspicious script tags or event handlers in query parameters; look for unusual outbound requests from browser sessions to external domains that may indicate data exfiltration.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching once a fixed Koji version is released given the public disclosure.
  • Implement web application firewall rules to block common reflected XSS patterns as a temporary layer.
  • Review all input reflection points in the application for similar unsanitized parameters.
  • Educate users on avoiding untrusted links to the Koji instance.

The record

A vulnerability in Koji was found. An unsanitized input allows for an XSS attack. Javascript code from a malicious link could be reflected in the resulting web page. It is not expected to be able to submit an action or make a change in Koji due to existing XSS protections in the code
