What it actually does

Authenticated user can trigger a server crash via malformed input when performing an LDAP modify operation on the userPassword attribute due to an incomplete prior fix.

Why it matters to the business

Denial of service leads to temporary unavailability of directory services, disrupting authentication and identity management operations until the server is restarted.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with valid credentials sends a specially crafted modify request targeting the userPassword field; the server fails to handle the malformed data safely and terminates, repeating the crash on subsequent attempts.

How to fix it

Upgrade 389-ds-base to a version containing the complete fix for the referenced prior issue; monitor vendor advisories for the exact patch release.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed package version matches or exceeds the fixed release; test LDAP modify operations with boundary and malformed password values in a non-production environment to verify stability.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain valid LDAP credentials
  2. Connect to the directory server
  3. Issue a modify operation on userPassword containing malformed input
  4. Observe server crash and restart cycle

How to detect it

Search directory server logs for repeated crashes or restarts immediately following userPassword modify operations; correlate with authentication events from known accounts.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the vendor fix immediately given the public disclosure
  • Restrict LDAP modify privileges to the minimum required accounts
  • Implement network segmentation and monitoring for anomalous LDAP traffic
  • Review logs for repeated server restarts correlated with modify operations

The record

The fix for CVE-2024-2199 in 389-ds-base was insufficient to cover all scenarios. In certain product versions, an authenticated user may cause a server crash while modifying `userPassword` using malformed input.
