What it actually does
Heap-based buffer overflow in the OpenPGP driver permits out-of-bounds writes triggered by crafted APDU responses from a malicious USB device or smart card during pkcs15-init enrollment, potentially enabling arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Systems performing smart-card enrollment face limited risk of code execution when physical access to enrollment hardware is possible; low EPSS and physical-access requirement keep overall exposure minimal despite the memory-corruption family.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker prepares a USB device or smart card that supplies malicious APDU replies during the card-enrollment workflow executed by pkcs15-init; the responses trigger the overflow in the OpenPGP driver path, resulting in out-of-bounds writes that may be leveraged for code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade github.com/cilium/cilium to version 1.9.16 or later; ensure any bundled or dependent libopensc packages are also updated to patched releases.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running Cilium binary reports version 1.9.16 or newer; inspect linked libopensc libraries for the corrected OpenPGP driver code; attempt enrollment with a known-good card to verify absence of crash or overflow indicators.
Typical attack path
- Prepare a crafted USB device or smart card with malicious APDU responses
- Gain physical access to a system performing card enrollment
- Insert the device and invoke pkcs15-init enrollment
- Trigger heap overflow via crafted responses
- Attempt to obtain arbitrary code execution
How to detect it
Review enrollment logs for pkcs15-init invocations involving unexpected or malformed APDU traffic; look for process crashes or heap-corruption signals during card initialization; correlate with physical-access audit logs.
What your security team should do
- Immediately upgrade all Cilium deployments to 1.9.16
- Restrict physical access to any systems that perform smart-card enrollment
- Review and harden enrollment workflows to reduce reliance on untrusted cards
- Monitor EPSS and KEV updates for any change in exploit availability
The record
A heap-based buffer overflow vulnerability was found in the libopensc OpenPGP driver. A crafted USB device or smart card with malicious responses to the APDUs during the card enrollment process using the `pkcs15-init` tool may lead to out-of-bound rights, possibly resulting in arbitrary code execution.
