What it actually does
Type confusion vulnerability triggered during property name lookup on an object used as the `with` environment, leading to memory corruption.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers could execute arbitrary code on affected systems, risking data theft, system compromise, and operational disruption; high ecosystem prevalence amplifies exposure across dependent software.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts malicious JavaScript that triggers the type confusion in the `with` statement handling; this is exploited in 2024 Zero-Day Exploitation Campaigns by Espionage and Financially Motivated Actors and Mozilla Firefox Use-After-Free Vulnerability campaigns to achieve remote code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade Firefox to 130 or later, Firefox ESR to 128.2 or 115.15 or later, Thunderbird to 128.2 or 115.15 or later; for stdlib (Go) update to 1.17.9.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify product versions meet or exceed the fixed releases and test that the type confusion condition no longer occurs under targeted property lookup scenarios.
Typical attack path
- Deliver malicious web content or email attachment to victim browser
- Trigger type confusion via crafted property lookup in `with` environment
- Corrupt memory to gain control of execution flow
- Execute payload for code execution or further persistence
How to detect it
Review browser process logs, memory dumps, and network traffic for patterns matching the 2024 Zero-Day Exploitation Campaigns by Espionage and Financially Motivated Actors and Mozilla Firefox Use-After-Free Vulnerability; correlate with unusual property access attempts in script execution traces.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize immediate patching due to active threat actor campaigns
- Monitor EPSS and KEV status for changes in exploitation likelihood
- Block known malicious domains associated with the campaigns
- Scan for affected versions across all endpoints
The record
A potentially exploitable type confusion could be triggered when looking up a property name on an object being used as the `with` environment. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 130, Firefox ESR < 128.2, Firefox ESR < 115.15, Thunderbird < 128.2, and Thunderbird < 115.15.
