What it actually does

Specially crafted requests to retrieve diff files for commits or merge requests trigger excessive resource consumption, resulting in denial of service.

Why it matters to the business

Development teams lose access to GitLab services until the instance is restarted or resources recover, halting code review, merging, and collaboration workflows.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker identifies a reachable GitLab instance and repeatedly issues requests for diff content on commits or merge requests, causing the application to exhaust CPU or memory and become unresponsive.

How to fix it

Upgrade GitLab CE/EE to 17.4.6, 17.5.4, or 17.6.2 or later. Apply the exact fixed package versions listed for each Ubuntu release where applicable and restart affected services.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running GitLab version meets or exceeds the fixed releases, then attempt legitimate diff requests to verify normal resource usage and response times.

Typical attack path

  1. Scan for exposed GitLab instances running vulnerable versions
  2. Locate commit or merge request diff endpoints
  3. Send repeated or malformed diff requests
  4. Observe service degradation or outage

How to detect it

Inspect web server and application logs for high volumes of requests to commit or merge request diff endpoints from single sources or with unusual parameters; correlate with CPU/memory spikes on GitLab hosts.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately schedule upgrades to the fixed GitLab versions
  • Monitor EPSS and threat intelligence for any increase in exploitation activity
  • Implement rate limiting on diff endpoints as a temporary control
  • Review access logs for anomalous diff request volumes

The record

An issue has been discovered in GitLab CE/EE affecting all versions from 9.4 before 17.4.6, 17.5 before 17.5.4, and 17.6 before 17.6.2. An attacker could cause a denial of service with requests for diff files on a commit or merge request.
