What it actually does
Invalid dm_block pointer left after dm_bm_read_lock failure on checksum or lock errors is cached by dm_array_cursor, causing double release and BUG_ON in dm-bufio cache_put during dm_array_cursor_end.
Why it matters to the business
Local users or automated processes triggering device-mapper cache metadata operations on corrupted blocks can crash the kernel, leading to denial of service and potential data inconsistency on storage systems.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access corrupts a device-mapper array block offline, then triggers cache device activation or cursor iteration to force a failed read lock path that leaves the stale pointer, resulting in the double-release crash.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected Linux kernel packages to the fixed commit 9c7c03d0e926762adf3a3a0ba86156fb5e19538b or later stable releases containing the dm-array cursor NULL-pointer fix on error paths.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel version contains the referenced commit, run the dm-unit array_cursor/damaged test, and verify no double-release BUG_ON occurs when replaying the described cache metadata corruption scenario.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access or ability to modify underlying storage blocks
- Corrupt a dm-array metadata block to cause read-lock or checksum failure
- Trigger device-mapper cache creation or array cursor operations that invoke the faulty path
- Observe kernel BUG_ON and system impact
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for device-mapper messages containing array_block_check failed, array validator check failed, get_ablock failed, and the subsequent BUG at drivers/md/dm-bufio.c:638.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems using device-mapper cache or thin provisioning
- Monitor for device-mapper array_block_check and dm-bufio BUG messages in kernel logs
- Apply the fix before exposing storage metadata to untrusted or potentially corrupt inputs
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: dm array: fix releasing a faulty array block twice in dm_array_cursor_end When dm_bm_read_lock() fails due to locking or checksum errors, it releases the faulty block implicitly while leaving an invalid output pointer behind. The caller of dm_bm_read_lock() should not operate on this invalid dm_block pointer, or it will lead to undefined result. For example, the dm_array_cursor incorrectly caches the invalid pointer on reading a faulty array block, causing a double release in dm_array_cursor_end(), then hitting the BUG_ON in dm-bufio cache_put(). In addition to the reproducer described above, this fix can be verified using the "array_cursor/damaged" test in dm-unit: dm-unit run /pdata/array_cursor/damaged --kernel-dir <KERNEL_DIR>
