What it actually does
Use-after-free in the MediaTek DRM driver where private->all_drm_private[i]->drm is not set to NULL on mtk_drm_bind error, allowing drm_atomic_helper_shutdown to dereference freed memory during platform shutdown.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel panic or crash on system reboot or shutdown on affected MediaTek-based devices, resulting in unexpected downtime and potential data loss during maintenance windows; low remote exploitability but high impact on embedded or mobile Linux deployments.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access triggers an error path in mtk_drm_bind (for example via malformed display initialization), then initiates a reboot or shutdown sequence; the shutdown handler in mtk_drm_shutdown calls drm_atomic_helper_shutdown which accesses the stale pointer, leading to KASAN-detected use-after-free and kernel fault.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix commit 7083b93e9755d60f0c2bcaa9d064308108280534 or later stable kernels containing the NULL assignment; rebuild and deploy the patched kernel on all affected MediaTek platforms; verify the pointer reset occurs before drm_dev_put.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel source contains the commit 7083b93e9755d60f0c2bcaa9d064308108280534; boot test on MediaTek hardware and monitor for absence of KASAN reports during repeated shutdown cycles; inspect mtk_drm.c for the NULL assignment after bind failure.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local code execution or shell on affected Linux system
- Trigger error condition during DRM bind for MediaTek hardware
- Initiate system reboot or shutdown
- Kernel executes mtk_drm_shutdown and dereferences freed drm pointer
- Resulting use-after-free causes panic or potential memory corruption
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and KASAN reports for strings referencing drm_atomic_helper_shutdown, mtk_drm_shutdown, and use-after-free at addresses accessed during device_shutdown or reboot paths; correlate with MediaTek DRM initialization failures.
- BUG: KASAN: use-after-free in drm_atomic_helper_shutdown
- mtk_drm_shutdown+0x54/0x80
- drm_atomic_helper_shutdown+0x33c/0x378
- private->all_drm_private[i]->drm
What your security team should do
- Immediately schedule kernel updates for all MediaTek DRM-enabled devices
- Add the fixed commit hash to internal kernel build pipelines
- Test reboot/shutdown paths in staging environments with KASAN enabled
- Monitor upstream stable releases for backports of this fix
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: drm/mediatek: Set private->all_drm_private[i]->drm to NULL if mtk_drm_bind returns err The pointer need to be set to NULL, otherwise KASAN complains about use-after-free. Because in mtk_drm_bind, all private's drm are set as follows. private->all_drm_private[i]->drm = drm; And drm will be released by drm_dev_put in case mtk_drm_kms_init returns failure. However, the shutdown path still accesses the previous allocated memory in drm_atomic_helper_shutdown. [ 84.874820] watchdog: watchdog0: watchdog did not stop!
