What it actually does
Unnecessary WARN_ON in functionfs_bind triggers kernel panic on race between adb daemon open/read/write paths and configfs UDC binding when ffs->state != FFS_ACTIVE and panic_on_warn is set.
Why it matters to the business
Unexpected system crashes and downtime on affected Linux kernels using USB gadget/FFS with panic_on_warn enabled, especially in embedded or Android-related deployments; older OpenShift packages carry the vulnerable code.
How an attack unfolds
Attacker or benign workload triggers concurrent adb operations from userspace daemon while configfs writes bind the UDC driver, hitting the WARN_ON in functionfs_bind during the race and causing panic when panic_on_warn is active. No remote code execution or privilege escalation is possible; impact is limited to denial of service via crash.
How to fix it
Update to a kernel containing commit bfe60030fcd976e3546e1f73d6d0eb3fea26442e or later; for listed Red Hat OpenShift packages apply the exact fixed versions such as 0:3.2.0.44-1.git.0.a4463d9.el7 or 0:1.4.7-1.el7 for nodejs-node-uuid.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify kernel source contains removal of the WARN_ON from functionfs_bind; confirm package versions match the listed fixed releases; test binding under concurrent ADB/configfs load without panic_on_warn.
Typical attack path
- Initiate ADB daemon activity (adb_open/adb_read/adb_write) from userspace
- Simultaneously perform UDC write via configfs to register the gadget driver
- Race causes functionfs_bind to observe ffs->state != FFS_ACTIVE
- WARN_ON fires and, with panic_on_warn enabled, kernel panics
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash dumps for the exact panic message 'kernel: panic_on_warn set' combined with the call trace containing ffs_func_bind, usb_add_function, configfs_composite_bind and gadget_bind_driver; correlate with concurrent USB gadget or ADB activity.
- ffs_func_bind+0x1c8/0x14a8
- kernel: panic_on_warn set
- functionfs_bind
- <ffs->state !=FFS_ACTIVE>
What your security team should do
- Apply the listed fixed kernel or package versions immediately on any system with panic_on_warn enabled
- Disable panic_on_warn on USB gadget hosts until patches are deployed
- Audit systems for presence of the vulnerable functionfs_bind code path
- Monitor for kernel panic reports matching the provided call trace
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: usb: gadget: f_fs: Remove WARN_ON in functionfs_bind This commit addresses an issue related to below kernel panic where panic_on_warn is enabled. It is caused by the unnecessary use of WARN_ON in functionsfs_bind, which easily leads to the following scenarios. 1.adb_write in adbd 2. UDC write via configfs ================= ===================== ->usb_ffs_open_thread() ->UDC write ->open_functionfs() ->configfs_write_iter() ->adb_open() ->gadget_dev_desc_UDC_store() ->adb_write() ->usb_gadget_register_driver_owner ->driver_register() ->StartMonitor() ->bus_add_driver() ->adb_read() ->gadget_bind_driver() <times-out without BIND event> ->configfs_composite_bind() ->usb_add_function() ->open_functionfs() ->ffs_func_bind() ->adb_open() ->functionfs_bind() <ffs->state !=FFS_ACTIVE> The adb_open, adb_read, and adb_write operations are invoked from the daemon, but trying to bind the function is a process that is invoked by UDC write through configfs, which opens up the possibility of a race condition between the two paths. In this race scenario, the kernel panic occurs due to the WARN_ON from functionfs_bind when panic_on_warn is enabled. This commit fixes the kernel panic by removing the unnecessary WARN_ON.
