What it actually does
ksmbd fails to pass ATTR_CTIME when calling notify_change to update mtime/atime, triggering a kernel warning in setattr_copy and potential denial of service via the SMB server worker thread.
Why it matters to the business
Systems running the affected kernel version may experience unexpected kernel warnings or worker thread instability when SMB clients modify file timestamps, leading to reduced availability of file sharing services until the kernel is updated.
How an attack unfolds
An authenticated SMB client issues a set-info request that updates mtime; ksmbd calls set_file_basic_info which invokes notify_change without ATTR_CTIME, causing the kernel warning in setattr_copy on the ksmbd-io workqueue.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit c7ab587bd33ce45e2aa6b6d2d36be7ef0bd16614 or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel; if immediate patching is not possible, restrict SMB access or disable ksmbd until updated.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit c7ab587bd33ce45e2aa6b6d2d36be7ef0bd16614; attempt an SMB set-info mtime operation and verify absence of the setattr_copy WARNING in dmesg or kernel logs.
Typical attack path
- Attacker obtains valid SMB credentials or uses an existing session
- Attacker sends SMB2 SET_INFO request targeting file basic information with new mtime
- ksmbd worker thread processes the request and calls set_file_basic_info
- notify_change is invoked without ATTR_CTIME flag
- setattr_copy emits WARNING and returns, potentially affecting the ksmbd worker
How to detect it
Search kernel logs (dmesg, /var/log/kern.log, journalctl) for the string 'setattr_copy+0x1ee' or the WARNING message referencing fs/attr.c and ksmbd-io workqueue; correlate with SMB connection timestamps.
- WARNING: CPU.*setattr_copy+0x1ee/0x200
- Workqueue: ksmbd-io handle_ksmbd_work [ksmbd]
- setattr_copy+0x1ee/0x200
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on all systems exposing ksmbd
- Monitor for the setattr_copy WARNING in kernel logs as a temporary detection measure
- Apply the fix within standard change windows given the local attack vector and moderate CVSS
- Review SMB exposure and consider network segmentation for file servers
