What it actually does
In the Linux kernel's mm/page_alloc, split_large_buddy() may call pfn_to_page() on a PFN that does not exist, leading to __pfn_to_section() returning NULL and a subsequent NULL pointer dereference in __section_mem_map_addr() under CONFIG_SPARSEMEM without CONFIG_SPARSEMEM_EXTREME when freeing the highest pageblock in the last memory section.
Why it matters to the business
Low-risk potential for kernel crashes or system instability on affected Linux configurations; no observed exploitation or ransomware use reduces urgency, though older Ubuntu QEMU deployments should still apply the kernel-level fix to maintain stability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker would need to craft memory allocation and freeing operations that reach the corner case in split_large_buddy() during pageblock handling; the flaw was identified via code inspection with no known threat actors or active campaigns.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream fix that skips the pfn_to_page() call on the first iteration of split_large_buddy(); for QEMU on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS upgrade to version 2.0.0+dfsg-2ubuntu1.26 or later.
How to confirm the fix worked
Inspect kernel source for the updated split_large_buddy() logic; confirm absence of related NULL dereference oops in dmesg after applying the patch and test under SPARSEMEM configurations.
Typical attack path
- Trigger specific page freeing of the highest pageblock in the final memory section
- Invoke split_large_buddy() on a non-existent PFN
- Cause NULL dereference in sparse memory section handling resulting in kernel panic
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for oops or panic entries referencing page_alloc, split_large_buddy, pfn_to_page, or __pfn_to_section around memory section handling.
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced kernel fix on systems using the vulnerable page allocator path
- Review memory configuration (SPARSEMEM) to assess exposure
- Monitor kernel logs for page allocation anomalies as a precautionary measure
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm/page_alloc: don't call pfn_to_page() on possibly non-existent PFN in split_large_buddy() In split_large_buddy(), we might call pfn_to_page() on a PFN that might not exist. In corner cases, such as when freeing the highest pageblock in the last memory section, this could result with CONFIG_SPARSEMEM && !CONFIG_SPARSEMEM_EXTREME in __pfn_to_section() returning NULL and and __section_mem_map_addr() dereferencing that NULL pointer. Let's fix it, and avoid doing a pfn_to_page() call for the first iteration, where we already have the page. So far this was found by code inspection, but let's just CC stable as the fix is easy.
