What it actually does
The flaw breaks suspend/resume sequences on i.MX6QDL platforms with connected PCIe devices, causing kernel hangs, imprecise external aborts, and driver failures (such as ath10k or iwlwifi) when attempting to restore power state from D3hot to D0.
Why it matters to the business
Embedded and industrial systems using affected hardware lose reliable power management, leading to unexpected downtime, forced reboots, and potential data loss during sleep/wake cycles; low EPSS and absence from KEV indicate limited broad exploitation risk but high impact on specific device fleets.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with the ability to trigger suspend/resume (via local access, power events, or malware) on i.MX6QDL hardware with PCIe peripherals forces the kernel into a faulty resume path that resets or inaccesses the device, crashing dependent drivers and hanging the system; listed threat actors appear mismatched to this platform-specific power-management issue.
How to fix it
Apply the upstream kernel patch that reuses common i.MX suspend/resume sequences while resetting the connected PCIe device; for listed chromium-browser packages on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS update to version 58.0.3029.81-0ubuntu0.14.04.1172 or later equivalent kernel fixes.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm kernel logs no longer show 'Unable to change power state from D3hot to D0' or 'imprecise external abort' on resume; verify PCIe devices reinitialize cleanly after suspend cycles on i.MX6QDL hardware.
Typical attack path
- Gain local or physical access to trigger system suspend
- Initiate or wait for resume cycle
- Trigger PCIe device power-state transition failure
- Cause kernel fault and driver crash leading to denial of service
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for ath10k_pci or iwlwifi power-state errors and imprecise external aborts during resume; correlate with i.MX6QDL platform identifiers and PCIe device resets.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching i.MX6QDL kernels in embedded deployments within 30 days
- Test suspend/resume thoroughly with PCIe wireless cards after update
- Monitor for any downstream dependents relying on this platform
- Disable suspend if immediate patching is not feasible
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: PCI: imx6: Fix suspend/resume support on i.MX6QDL The suspend/resume functionality is currently broken on the i.MX6QDL platform, as documented in the NXP errata (ERR005723): https://www.nxp.com/docs/en/errata/IMX6DQCE.pdf This patch addresses the issue by sharing most of the suspend/resume sequences used by other i.MX devices, while avoiding modifications to critical registers that disrupt the PCIe functionality. It targets the same problem as the following downstream commit: https://github.com/nxp-imx/linux-imx/commit/4e92355e1f79d225ea842511fcfd42b343b32995 Unlike the downstream commit, this patch also resets the connected PCIe device if possible. Without this reset, certain drivers, such as ath10k or iwlwifi, will crash on resume. The device reset is also done by the driver on other i.MX platforms, making this patch consistent with existing practices. Upon resuming, the kernel will hang and display an error. Here's an example of the error encountered with the ath10k driver: ath10k_pci 0000:01:00.0: Unable to change power state from D3hot to D0, device inaccessible Unhandled fault: imprecise external abort (0x1406) at 0x0106f944 Without this patch, suspend/resume will fail on i.MX6QDL devices if a PCIe device is connected.
