A timing flaw in Linux audio handling can let one sound stream accidentally take over hardware resources from another, sometimes crashing the audio system.

What it actually does
Race condition in Intel SOF HDA DAI handling allows link DMA channel to be released on stream stop; an intervening stream can then acquire the same channel, mixing DMA resources and triggering firmware errors or crashes.
Why it matters to the business
Audio subsystems on affected Linux systems can become unstable under rapid start/stop workloads, producing unexpected firmware crashes that interrupt media playback, conferencing, or any application relying on Intel HDA audio.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access crafts a sequence of audio stream operations (stop one stream, immediately start another on a different device) that races between the stop trigger and DMA release, causing the kernel to hand the still-active link DMA to the new stream and corrupt firmware state.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit adc218676eef25575469234709c2d87185ca223a or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel. Where live patching is available, apply the vendor's backported fix.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel git commit or package version contains adc218676eef25575469234709c2d87185ca223a; attempt the documented two-aplay stop/start sequence and verify no firmware error or crash occurs.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell on target Linux system with audio device access
- Issue stop on one PCM stream while another stream is opened on a different HDA link
- Trigger the race window between stop and DMA release
- Observe resulting firmware error or kernel crash
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for SOF firmware error messages or HDA link DMA mismatches immediately after audio stop/start sequences; correlate with process execution of audio clients around the same timestamp.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems exposing Intel HDA/Intel SOF audio to untrusted local users
- Monitor vendor advisories for distribution-specific backports of adc218676eef25575469234709c2d87185ca223a
- Restrict unprivileged access to audio devices until patches are deployed
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ASoC: SOF: Intel: hda-dai: Do not release the link DMA on STOP The linkDMA should not be released on stop trigger since a stream re-start might happen without closing of the stream. This leaves a short time for other streams to 'steal' the linkDMA since it has been released. This issue is not easy to reproduce under normal conditions as usually after stop the stream is closed, or the same stream is restarted, but if another stream got in between the stop and start, like this: aplay -Dhw:0,3 -c2 -r48000 -fS32_LE /dev/zero -d 120 CTRL+z aplay -Dhw:0,0 -c2 -r48000 -fS32_LE /dev/zero -d 120 then the link DMA channels will be mixed up, resulting firmware error or crash.
