What it actually does
The Net::EasyTCP Perl package relies on the weak builtin rand() function for randomization when no stronger module is available, resulting in potentially predictable random values.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers may be able to guess or predict values that should be random, weakening security mechanisms in affected applications and increasing risk of compromise, though no active exploitation is known.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker would analyze the output of the weak randomization to identify patterns and predict future values used in security-sensitive operations within the Net::EasyTCP package.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a fixed version of the affected package. For chromium-browser on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, update to version 58.0.3029.81-0ubuntu0.14.04.1172 or later.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the installed version matches or exceeds the fixed version and check for presence of strong randomization modules like Math::Random::Secure in Perl environments.
Typical attack path
- Identify use of Net::EasyTCP in target systems
- Observe outputs from randomization functions
- Analyze for predictability in rand() usage
- Predict and exploit the next random values in protocol or key generation
How to detect it
Review application logs for unusual patterns in connection or data handling that might indicate predicted random values being exploited; monitor for Perl process anomalies.
What your security team should do
- Apply the specified updates immediately to affected systems
- Audit Perl dependencies for use of Net::EasyTCP
- Ensure strong random number generators are installed and used
The record
The Net::EasyTCP package 0.15 through 0.26 for Perl uses Perl's builtin rand() if no strong randomization module is present.
