CVE-2024-56781

What it actually does

Missing #size-cells properties on escc nodes in the device tree cause deprecated handling warnings during of_bus_n_size_cells and address translation at boot on affected PowerMac hardware.

Boot-time warning messages appear on legacy PowerPC systems with no functional disruption or data exposure; older kernels on powermac hardware require updates to suppress noise.

How an attack unfolds

No attacker exploitation path exists; the condition is a static device-tree misconfiguration exposed only during early kernel boot on specific legacy hardware.

How to fix it

Update to fixed kernel versions: Linux 5.4.287 or the commit 0b94d838018fb0a824e0cd3149034928c99fb1b7; apply the prom_init change that supplies the missing #size-cells property for escc nodes.

How to confirm the fix worked

Boot an affected powermac and confirm absence of the 'Missing #size-cells' warning for /pci.../escc@13000; verify device-tree nodes now contain #size-cells after prom_init runs.

How to detect it

Inspect kernel boot logs for 'Missing #size-cells in /pci' and the call trace involving of_bus_n_size_cells and pmz_init_port; no post-boot artifacts exist.
