What it actually does
Race condition in fib6_select_path causes infinite loop during multipath IPv6 route traversal when siblings are concurrently deleted, leading to soft lockup and watchdog panic.
Why it matters to the business
High-churn IPv6 environments such as edge routers experience repeated system panics and service disruption; dynamic BGP route updates combined with traffic load trigger the flaw.
How an attack unfolds
No direct attacker exploitation path exists; the condition is triggered internally when user-space routing daemons rapidly add and remove next hops while the kernel traverses the RCU-protected sibling list under load, causing nodes to self-reference and loop.
How to fix it
Update to a kernel containing commit d0ec61c9f3583b76aebdbb271f5c0d3fcccd48b2 or later; rebuild with RCU primitives applied to fib6_siblings traversal and reference handling.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm presence of the fixing commit in the running kernel source; reproduce with the supplied test script that combines route churn and iperf3 IPv6 load and verify absence of soft lockup messages.
Typical attack path
- Routing daemon performs frequent next-hop updates via netlink or ioctl
- Kernel fib6_select_path walks the circular sibling list on packet ingress
- Concurrent deletion on another CPU frees nodes while traversal is active
- List pointers form self-referential loop and refcount reaches zero
- CPU spins indefinitely until watchdog fires and panics the system
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for watchdog_timer_fn followed by fib6_select_path RIP addresses; inspect netlink route update volume and concurrent IPv6 traffic spikes preceding the panic.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on all IPv6 multipath routers within the next maintenance window
- Monitor for soft lockup watchdog messages in dmesg on affected systems
- Limit unnecessary route churn from BGP peers where operationally feasible
- Test patched kernels in a lab environment using the provided reproduction script before production rollout
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ipv6: Fix soft lockups in fib6_select_path under high next hop churn Soft lockups have been observed on a cluster of Linux-based edge routers located in a highly dynamic environment. Using the `bird` service, these routers continuously update BGP-advertised routes due to frequently changing nexthop destinations, while also managing significant IPv6 traffic. The lockups occur during the traversal of the multipath circular linked-list in the `fib6_select_path` function, particularly while iterating through the siblings in the list. The issue typically arises when the nodes of the linked list are unexpectedly deleted concurrently on a different core—indicated by their 'next' and 'previous' elements pointing back to the node itself and their reference count dropping to zero. This results in an infinite loop, leading to a soft lockup that triggers a system panic via the watchdog timer. Apply RCU primitives in the problematic code sections to resolve the issue. Where necessary, update the references to fib6_siblings to annotate or use the RCU APIs. Include a test script that reproduces the issue. The script periodically updates the routing table while generating a heavy load of outgoing IPv6 traffic through multiple iperf3 clients. It consistently induces infinite soft lockups within a couple of minutes.
