What it actually does
Incorrect 16-bit aggregation ID mask on P7 chips allows driver to index TPA buffers using extra metadata bits, leading to invalid SKB header access and kernel BUG in __skb_pull during GRO/LRO processing.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using affected Broadcom network adapters can experience unexpected kernel crashes during normal high-throughput network traffic, causing service outages and requiring reboots.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker or workload generates network traffic that triggers hardware GRO/LRO aggregation on a 5760X adapter; the driver miscalculates the aggregation ID, stores or retrieves packet headers from the wrong buffer, and hits the kernel BUG when eth_type_trans attempts to access an empty SKB.
How to fix it
Update the bnxt_en driver to the fixed version containing commit fe9274027697c69c1430dc7ee568f82b331ef972, which changes the aggregation ID mask to 12 bits for all P5_PLUS chips. Reboot after module reload or kernel update.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the bnxt_en module reports the corrected mask logic or contains the referenced commit; verify no oops occurs under sustained GRO/LRO traffic on 5760X hardware; check dmesg for absence of the eth_type_trans BUG signature.
Typical attack path
- Attacker sends or induces network flows that cause hardware to perform GRO/LRO aggregation
- Driver reads completion structure and applies oversized 16-bit aggregation ID mask
- Incorrect buffer index causes header data to be written to or read from invalid TPA slot
- Subsequent __skb_pull call finds no valid header and triggers kernel BUG
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for the exact BUG line at include/linux/skbuff.h combined with eth_type_trans and bnxt_tpa_end call traces; inspect for repeated oops on systems with bnxt_en loaded and 5760X hardware.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching kernel packages containing bnxt_en on all systems with 5760X or similar Broadcom adapters
- Monitor for kernel oops in production workloads that use large receive offload
- Temporarily disable GRO/LRO via ethtool if immediate patching is not feasible
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bnxt_en: Fix aggregation ID mask to prevent oops on 5760X chips The 5760X (P7) chip's HW GRO/LRO interface is very similar to that of the previous generation (5750X or P5). However, the aggregation ID fields in the completion structures on P7 have been redefined from 16 bits to 12 bits. The freed up 4 bits are redefined for part of the metadata such as the VLAN ID. The aggregation ID mask was not modified when adding support for P7 chips. Including the extra 4 bits for the aggregation ID can potentially cause the driver to store or fetch the packet header of GRO/LRO packets in the wrong TPA buffer. It may hit the BUG() condition in __skb_pull() because the SKB contains no valid packet header: kernel BUG at include/linux/skbuff.h:2766! This will work because the maximum aggregation ID is less than 4096 on all P5_PLUS chips.
