What it actually does
Use-after-free in btmtk_process_coredump after hci_devcd_append releases the skb, allowing subsequent access to freed memory in the Bluetooth MediaTek driver path.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel memory corruption on Linux systems using affected Bluetooth hardware can lead to crashes, denial of service, or potential privilege escalation; high prevalence in embedded and server distributions increases exposure across fleets.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker sends crafted ACL packets that trigger btusb_rx_work and btmtk_process_coredump; hci_devcd_append frees the skb while the code still reads from it, causing the use-after-free.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to commit ecdcaea0e4057171ea4c3783e1cc1c900ad99125 or any later stable release that includes the fix; apply the change that checks data->cd_info.cnt >= MTK_COREDUMP_NUM before hci_devcd_append and calls hci_devcd_complete when required.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains commit ecdcaea0e4057171ea4c3783e1cc1c900ad99125; confirm the corrected comparison operator and early completion logic are present in btmtk.c; recompile and boot test with MediaTek Bluetooth devices.
Typical attack path
- Send malicious Bluetooth ACL data to trigger btusb_recv_acl_mtk
- Invoke btmtk_process_coredump via the receive workqueue
- Call hci_devcd_append which frees the skb
- Access the now-freed skb object causing slab-use-after-free
How to detect it
Inspect kernel logs for KASAN slab-use-after-free reports mentioning btmtk_process_coredump or btusb_rx_work; correlate with Bluetooth coredump activity in dmesg and workqueue traces around the time of crashes.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on all systems exposing Bluetooth interfaces
- Disable Bluetooth kernel modules where not required
- Monitor for KASAN reports or slab corruption in btmtk/btusb paths
- Apply the fix within standard patch windows given low but non-zero EPSS
