What it actually does
Insufficient udelay after power-up handshake in imx gpcv2 pmdomain driver allows Asynchronous SError Interrupt during clk_imx8mp_audiomix_runtime_resume and genpd runtime resume paths, triggering kernel panic.
Why it matters to the business
Systems using affected i.MX8M hardware may experience boot or driver-load crashes, causing downtime on embedded devices; low exploitability and no ransomware usage reduce immediate enterprise risk despite kernel-level impact.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local code execution loads a module such as imx_sdma that triggers platform driver registration and runtime PM resume; the short delay allows the error interrupt before the handshake completes, panicking the kernel.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to the fix in commit a63907c8c712414643b597debcd09d16b6827b23 or later stable releases that change the delay from udelay(5) to udelay(10) in the gpcv2 driver.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the kernel source contains the updated udelay value in pmdomain/imx/gpcv2.c and that the reported panic stack no longer occurs on the same hardware during driver_probe_device and sdma_driver_init.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local execution on target i.MX8M device
- Trigger module load or device probe that exercises genpd_runtime_resume
- Cause rpm_resume of a supplier whose clock block handshake races with the insufficient udelay
- Induce Asynchronous SError Interrupt leading to kernel panic
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for the exact panic strings 'Asynchronous SError Interrupt' combined with 'clk_imx8mp_audiomix_runtime_resume' and the call trace through genpd_runtime_resume; correlate with udev-worker or module-load events.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrade on all i.MX8M-based systems within standard patch cycles
- Monitor for kernel panics referencing arm64_serror_panic and clk_imx8mp_audiomix_runtime_resume
- Test updated kernels on representative Toradex Verdin and similar boards before broad deployment

So delay is the only option here. The udelay(10) is a data got by experiment.
