What it actually does
Signed integer index in devmap and xskmap handling allows out-of-bounds writes during element deletion and map free operations; changing the index and iterator variables from int to u32 prevents the negative-index arithmetic that reaches arbitrary kernel memory.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers who can load BPF programs may corrupt kernel memory, leading to crashes, privilege escalation, or denial of service on systems running the affected kernel; the low EPSS and lack of KEV listing indicate limited observed in-the-wild exploitation so far, but the memory-corruption family and presence in widely deployed Linux kernels still warrant prompt patching.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with the ability to insert and delete entries from a devmap or xskmap (typically via a crafted BPF program) supplies a negative index that, when treated as a large unsigned offset, writes outside the map array; the same flaw triggers during dev_map_free when an int iterator walks the map, enabling kernel memory corruption before the map is released.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 0f170e91d3063ca60baec4bd9f544faf3bfe29eb or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel; where distribution backports exist, apply the corresponding package updates for the running kernel series.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 0f170e91d3063ca60baec4bd9f544faf3bfe29eb (or the distribution-equivalent patch) via 'uname -r' and kernel build logs; recompile a test BPF program that exercises devmap deletion and verify no page-fault oops occurs during map free.
Typical attack path
- Obtain CAP_BPF or equivalent privileges to load and attach BPF programs
- Create a devmap or xskmap and populate it with entries
- Trigger deletion operations that pass a negative index value
- Force map release (e.g., via program detachment or process exit) to exercise the int iterator in dev_map_free
- Leverage the resulting out-of-bounds write for privilege escalation or denial of service
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash reports for the strings 'dev_map_free' combined with page-fault oops or 'unable to handle page fault'; look for unexpected BPF map free operations in audit or system-call traces on systems that permit unprivileged BPF loading.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on any system exposing BPF to untrusted workloads or containers
- Review BPF program loading policies and restrict CAP_BPF to the minimum necessary users and services
- Monitor kernel logs for dev_map_free page-fault signatures until patches are deployed
- After patching, re-test critical BPF-based networking or observability workloads
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: bpf: fix OOB devmap writes when deleting elements Jordy reported issue against XSKMAP which also applies to DEVMAP - the index used for accessing map entry, due to being a signed integer, causes the OOB writes. Fix is simple as changing the type from int to u32, however, when compared to XSKMAP case, one more thing needs to be addressed. When map is released from system via dev_map_free(), we iterate through all of the entries and an iterator variable is also an int, which implies OOB accesses. Again, change it to be u32.
