What it actually does
The hisi_sas driver interrupt thread and hardware handler run on the same CPU without yielding; under sustained high interrupt load from an expander connected to many SAS SSDs, irq_wait_for_interrupt loops indefinitely, starving the watchdog and triggering soft lockups in fput_many, aio_complete_rw, and scsi paths.
Why it matters to the business
High-performance storage configurations can experience CPU lockups that halt I/O processing and require reboots, reducing system availability and disrupting workloads that rely on the affected SAS controllers.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local access or the ability to generate heavy SAS I/O traffic forces repeated interrupts on the hisi_sas interrupt thread; because cond_resched is absent, the thread never yields, the watchdog expires, and the kernel logs a soft lockup that can crash or hang the system.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 3dd2c5cb2c698a02a4ed2ea0acb7c9909374a8bf which adds the required cond_resched() call in the hisi_sas interrupt path.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 3dd2c5cb2c698a02a4ed2ea0acb7c9909374a8bf or later; reproduce the high-I/O expander scenario and verify absence of soft-lockup traces referencing hisi_sas or fput_many.
Typical attack path
- Connect expander with 12+ high-performance SAS SSDs to hisi_sas controller
- Generate sustained high-rate I/O or interrupt traffic
- Interrupt thread executes continuously on one CPU without rescheduling
- Watchdog timer expires after 22+ seconds
- Kernel logs soft lockup and may panic or hang
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for 'watchdog: BUG: soft lockup' combined with hisi_sas, irq/.*hisi_sas, slot_complete_v3_hw, or the fput_many call trace; correlate with high SAS interrupt rates on affected hardware.
- watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU.*stuck for .*s! \[irq/.*-hisi_sa
- slot_complete_v3_hw.*hisi_sas_v3_hw
- cq_thread_v3_hw.*hisi_sas_v3_hw
- sas_scsi_task_done.*libsas
- fput_many+0x8c/0xdc
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on systems using hisi_sas controllers with expanders and high-performance SSDs
- Monitor kernel logs for soft lockup messages involving irq/.*hisi_sas and scsi paths
- Test storage performance workloads after patching to ensure interrupt handling no longer starves the scheduler

In the performance test scenario, function irq_wait_for_interrupt() will always return 0 if lots of interrupts occurs and the CPU will be continuously consumed. As a result, the CPU cannot run the watchdog thread. When the watchdog time exceeds the specified time, call trace occurs. To fix it, add cond_resched() to execute the watchdog thread.
