What it actually does
Causes list corruption in the SLUB allocator when a slab with metadata corruption (from failed alloc_consistency_checks under slub_debug=UFPZ) is removed from the full list via remove_full, resulting in list_del hitting LIST_POISON1 and triggering a kernel BUG.
Why it matters to the business
Produces kernel panics and system crashes on Linux hosts using SLUB debugging, especially those running XFS, leading to unplanned downtime and potential loss of in-flight work.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker or workload triggers allocation consistency failures that mark entire slabs used, then later frees objects belonging to those slabs; the resulting remove_full call corrupts internal lists, which can be leveraged for denial of service or further memory manipulation in affected kernels.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a kernel containing commit 33a213c04faff6c3a7fe77e947db81bc7270fe32; apply the corresponding stable or distribution update that backports the fix for the SLUB full-list removal path.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel includes the referenced commit, then reproduce the original scenario under slub_debug=UFPZ and verify that list_del corruption no longer occurs and the slab is isolated instead.
Typical attack path
- Boot kernel with slub_debug=UFPZ enabled
- Cause alloc_consistency_checks to fail on a slab
- Mark all objects in the slab as used and remove it from partial list
- Free an object belonging to the corrupted slab
- Trigger remove_full and observe list_del on poisoned pointers
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and crash dumps for messages containing list_del corruption, LIST_POISON1, __list_del_entry_valid_or_report, and the call trace through free_to_partial_list and xfs_inodegc_worker.

What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems that enable slub_debug
- Monitor kernel logs for list_del corruption and list_debug BUGs
- Consider disabling slub_debug=UFPZ on production workloads until patched
- Review XFS inode-garbage-collection paths for exposure if debugging remains active
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm/slub: Avoid list corruption when removing a slab from the full list Boot with slub_debug=UFPZ. If allocated object failed in alloc_consistency_checks, all objects of the slab will be marked as used, and then the slab will be removed from the partial list. When an object belonging to the slab got freed later, the remove_full() function is called. Because the slab is neither on the partial list nor on the full list, it eventually lead to a list corruption (actually a list poison being detected). So we need to mark and isolate the slab page with metadata corruption, do not put it back in circulation. Because the debug caches avoid all the fastpaths, reusing the frozen bit to mark slab page with metadata corruption seems to be fine.
