What it actually does
In KASAN-enabled Linux kernels, the vmalloc purge path performs a separate TLB flush for each vmap_area instead of batching them, causing excessive time spent in smp_call_function_many_cond during drain_vmap_area_work and triggering soft lockups on high-core-count systems under heavy vmalloc load.
Why it matters to the business
Systems performing intensive memory operations such as kernel builds on large servers can experience prolonged unresponsiveness or watchdog-induced reboots, reducing availability and reliability for workloads that rely on KASAN instrumentation.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with the ability to trigger repeated vmalloc allocations and releases (for example via user-space mappings or kernel subsystems exercising vmalloc) forces the kernel to enter the purge path; each individual kasan_release_vmalloc call issues a full flush_tlb_kernel_range, accumulating enough latency to exceed soft lockup thresholds.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to the commit that combines all TLB flush operations for KASAN shadow virtual addresses into a single operation (f9a18889aad9b4c19c6c4550c67ad4f9ed2a354f or later stable backports).
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains the fix commit, then reproduce the original high-core make -j workload under KASAN and verify that drain_vmap_area_work completes without soft lockup messages or excessive per-node flush latency.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local execution or trigger kernel code paths that allocate and free many vmalloc regions
- Cause the drain_vmap_area_work to run while KASAN shadow addresses are being released
- Force repeated calls to purge_vmap_node that each invoke a separate flush_tlb_kernel_range
- Sustain the workload long enough for the cumulative flush time to exceed the soft lockup watchdog threshold
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for soft lockup messages referencing smp_call_function_many_cond, drain_vmap_area_work, or purge_vmap_node; correlate with KASAN-enabled builds and high vmalloc churn.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel upgrades on any KASAN-enabled systems with 64 or more cores that perform heavy vmalloc activity
- Monitor for soft lockup reports mentioning drain_vmap_area_work or flush_tlb_kernel_range in kernel logs
- Apply the fix before enabling KASAN on production large-scale build or test systems
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mm/vmalloc: combine all TLB flush operations of KASAN shadow virtual address into one operation When compiling kernel source 'make -j $(nproc)' with the up-and-running KASAN-enabled kernel on a 256-core machine, the following soft lockup is shown: watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#28 stuck for 22s! The following ftrace log shows that the lockup CPU spends too much time iterating vmap_nodes and flushing TLB when purging vm_area structures. (Some info is trimmed). kworker: funcgraph_entry: | drain_vmap_area_work() { kworker: funcgraph_entry: | mutex_lock() { kworker: funcgraph_entry: 1.092 us | __cond_resched(); kworker: funcgraph_exit: 3.306 us | } ... ... kworker: funcgraph_entry: | flush_tlb_kernel_range() { ... ... kworker: funcgraph_exit: # 7533.649 us | } ... ... kworker: funcgraph_entry: 2.344 us | mutex_unlock(); kworker: funcgraph_exit: $ 23871554 us | } The drain_vmap_area_work() spends over 23 seconds. There are 2805 flush_tlb_kernel_range() calls in the ftrace log. * One is called in __purge_vmap_area_lazy(). * Others are called by purge_vmap_node->kasan_release_vmalloc. purge_vmap_node() iteratively releases kasan vmalloc allocations and flushes TLB for each vmap_area. - [Rough calculation] Each flush_tlb_kernel_range() runs about 7.5ms. -- 2804 * 7.5ms = 21.03 seconds. -- That's why a soft lock is triggered. 2.
