Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A flaw in the AMD graphics driver on Linux can leak memory when the driver is started and stopped repeatedly, which may eventually affect system stability on computers that use those graphics cards.

What it actually does

Memory leak occurs in the AMD GPU display driver during repeated module insertion and removal because VBIOS DMUB communication fails on warm boots, leaving allocations in the memory manager uncleaned and triggering drm_mm_takedown warnings.

Why it matters to the business

Workstations and servers using AMD GPUs may experience gradual memory pressure or unexpected warnings during driver reloads, potentially requiring reboots and disrupting graphics workloads or system stability on affected Ubuntu and Linux distributions.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with local shell access repeatedly inserts and removes the amdgpu kernel module to trigger the early-init memory loss path, exhausting kernel memory resources over time and producing call traces that indicate the leak.

How to fix it

Upgrade the Linux kernel to a fixed version such as 6.11.11 or the corresponding Ubuntu package updates (for example linux 3.13.0-91.138 on 14.04 LTS, 4.4.0-28.47 on 16.04 LTS, or later equivalents listed for each affected series). Reboot after installation and verify the amdgpu module no longer produces the memory-manager warning on reload.

How to confirm the fix worked

After applying the update, load and unload the amdgpu module multiple times while monitoring dmesg for absence of the Memory manager not clean during takedown warning and confirm drm_mm_takedown is not triggered.

Typical attack path

  1. Obtain local unprivileged or privileged shell access on a system with the vulnerable amdgpu driver
  2. Execute modprobe amdgpu followed by modprobe -r amdgpu in a loop
  3. Observe drm_mm_takedown warnings and increasing memory pressure from uncleared allocations
  4. Continue cycling the module to amplify resource consumption

How to detect it

Search kernel logs (dmesg, /var/log/kern.log, journalctl) for the strings Memory manager not clean during takedown and drm_mm_takedown warnings occurring after amdgpu module unload; correlate with repeated modprobe activity in audit logs.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize kernel package updates on all systems containing AMD GPUs within the next maintenance window
  • Add kernel version checks to vulnerability scanning to flag remaining vulnerable amdgpu builds
  • Restrict unprivileged users from loading or unloading kernel modules via modprobe blacklisting or capabilities where feasible

First time driver is removed, memory is freed but when second time the driver is inserted, VBIOS dmub is not active, since the PSP policy is to retain the driver loaded version on subsequent warm boots. Hence, communication with VBIOS DMUB fails. Fix this by aborting further comm ---truncated---
