What it actually does
Zero-length Netflow v9 templates trigger a divide-by-zero error during packet processing, causing the FastNetMon application to crash.
Why it matters to the business
Disrupts network traffic monitoring availability, creating temporary blind spots for security and operational visibility until the service restarts.
How an attack unfolds
An unauthenticated remote attacker sends Netflow v9 packets containing zero-length templates to a listening FastNetMon instance; the malformed input is processed without length validation, resulting in an immediate divide-by-zero fault and process termination.
How to fix it
Upgrade FastNetMon Community Edition to a version newer than 1.2.7 that contains the fix for zero-length template handling.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed version exceeds 1.2.7; test by replaying zero-length Netflow v9 templates in a lab environment and verify the process remains stable.
Typical attack path
- Craft and transmit Netflow v9 packets with zero-length templates to the target FastNetMon service
- Trigger divide-by-zero error during template parsing
- Cause application crash and denial of service
How to detect it
Review application logs and system crash dumps for divide-by-zero faults or abrupt process terminations coinciding with Netflow v9 traffic; correlate with incoming packet captures containing zero-length templates.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize upgrade of all FastNetMon Community Edition instances to a patched release
- Restrict exposure of Netflow listeners to trusted collectors only via network controls
- Monitor service health and implement automated restart procedures for the monitoring daemon
The record
An issue was discovered in FastNetMon Community Edition through 1.2.7. Zero-length templates for Netflow v9 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (divide-by-zero error and application crash).
