What it actually does
Race condition in Bluetooth ISO socket handling allows circular locking between hdev lock and sk_lock-AF_BLUETOOTH-BTPROTO_ISO, leading to potential deadlock during iso_listen_bis and hci_le_per_adv_report_evt paths.
Why it matters to the business
Bluetooth audio and data connections on Linux systems can trigger kernel deadlocks, causing system hangs, loss of wireless functionality, and unplanned reboots that disrupt operations until patched.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local or adjacent Bluetooth access triggers LE periodic advertising reports while ISO listen operations are in progress, acquiring hdev lock then attempting to acquire the socket lock in the reverse order of the expected dependency, resulting in deadlock.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit c541d7b5e17987ed330798b07d4ad508859c1c93 or later; apply the fix that releases the socket lock before entering iso_listen_bis.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains commit c541d7b5e17987ed330798b07d4ad508859c1c93; confirm absence of the circular locking warning in dmesg when exercising Bluetooth ISO listen and LE advertising paths.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local or adjacent network access to a Bluetooth-enabled Linux host
- Initiate ISO socket listen operations via userspace Bluetooth stack
- Send crafted LE periodic advertising report events to hci_rx_work
- Force the reverse lock acquisition order between hdev and socket locks
- Trigger the deadlock scenario documented in the lockdep warning
How to detect it
Search kernel logs and dmesg for the strings 'possible circular locking dependency detected', 'iso_connect_cfm', 'hci_le_per_adv_report_evt', and 'sk_lock-AF_BLUETOOTH-BTPROTO_ISO' around the time of Bluetooth activity.
- possible circular locking dependency detected
- iso_connect_cfm+0x253/0x840 [bluetooth]
- hci_le_per_adv_report_evt+0x47/0x2f0 [bluetooth]
- sk_lock-AF_BLUETOOTH-BTPROTO_ISO
- &hdev->lock
What your security team should do
- Apply the kernel patch or upgrade to a fixed version immediately on systems using Bluetooth ISO sockets
- Monitor dmesg and kernel logs for the specific lockdep circular dependency warning
- Disable Bluetooth ISO functionality if the feature is not required until patches are deployed
- Test Bluetooth audio and LE advertising workloads after applying the update
