What it actually does
Unaligned atomic read of the genmask field in struct nft_set_ext inside nft_set_hash during nft_rhash_gc garbage collection, producing an alignment fault (ESR 0x0000000096000021) and kernel oops.
Why it matters to the business
Kernel crashes on Linux systems using nftables hash sets cause unplanned reboots, service outages, and loss of availability; widespread use of the kernel in servers and appliances amplifies operational disruption.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with privileges to manage nftables creates hash sets that trigger the rhash garbage collector workqueue; the unaligned access in nft_rhash_gc then faults, crashing the kernel. The issue appears in contexts of Linux kernel memory corruption campaigns by espionage and financially motivated actors.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 352f8eaaabd008f09d1e176194edc261a7304084 or to 5.4.289 or later; rebuild and reboot affected systems.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains the alignment fix, inspect struct nft_set_ext size with pahole on the rebuilt kernel, and exercise nftables hash-set GC workloads without observing alignment faults.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local execution context with nftables management rights
- Install nftables rules that populate rhash sets
- Allow the events_power_efficient workqueue to run nft_rhash_gc
- Trigger the unaligned atomic read and induce kernel panic
How to detect it
Search kernel logs for Oops messages containing nft_rhash_gc, alignment fault ESR values, and workqueue entries from nf_tables; correlate with process names kworker and tainted module indicators.
- nft_rhash_gc+0x200/0x2d8 [nf_tables]
- ESR = 0x0000000096000021
- Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address
- Workqueue: events_power_efficient nft_rhash_gc [nf_tables]
- Internal error: Oops: 0000000096000021
What your security team should do
- Apply the referenced kernel updates on all affected hosts within the next maintenance window
- Prioritize systems that expose nftables to untrusted local users
- Add kernel oops monitoring for nf_tables call traces to existing alerting
- Review and restrict nftables configuration privileges where feasible
