What it actually does

Malformed PLY input triggers an uncaught std::out_of_range exception inside PCLPointCloud2::at during parsing, causing the hosting process to terminate.

Why it matters to the business

Applications that ingest untrusted PLY files can be forced offline, interrupting workflows that rely on point-cloud processing until the service is restarted.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a specially malformed PLY file and supplies it to any application that uses PCL 1.14.1 to parse the file; the library throws an unhandled exception and the process crashes, achieving denial of service.

How to fix it

Upgrade PCL to a version that properly handles the exceptional case in PCLPointCloud2::at; until a patched release is available, wrap calls to at() in try-catch blocks or reject untrusted PLY files before parsing.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the presence of the vulnerable PCL version, attempt to parse a test malformed PLY file in a controlled environment, and verify that the process no longer terminates after applying the fix or mitigation.

Typical attack path

  1. Create a PLY file containing data that triggers out-of-range access in PCLPointCloud2::at
  2. Deliver the file to the target application via any accepted input channel
  3. Trigger parsing of the file
  4. Observe process termination and service unavailability

How to detect it

Review application and system logs for sudden crashes or uncaught C++ exceptions while processing PLY files; correlate timestamps of crashes with file ingestion events.

What your security team should do

  • Identify all deployments that link against PCL 1.14.1 and schedule upgrades
  • Add input sanitization or exception handling around PLY parsing code
  • Monitor application logs for abrupt terminations during PLY processing

The record

While parsing certain malformed PLY files, PCL version 1.14.1 crashes due to an uncaught std::out_of_range exception in PCLPointCloud2::at. This issue could potentially be exploited to cause a denial-of-service (DoS) attack when processing untrusted PLY files.
