What it actually does
Failure to release an skb allocated during xsk descriptor processing when invalid TX metadata options are detected causes repeated memory leaks that exhaust the send buffer and block further packet transmission.
Why it matters to the business
Systems relying on AF_XDP sockets for high-performance networking can experience gradual resource exhaustion, degraded throughput, and eventual inability to send traffic; the low ecosystem prevalence limits widespread operational disruption but still requires prompt attention on affected kernels.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with the ability to submit crafted xsk descriptors supplies invalid TX metadata options on the first fragment, triggering the allocation of an skb that is never freed; repeated submissions exhaust available send buffers and prevent legitimate transmission.
How to fix it
Upgrade the Linux kernel to commit 7f0d0dd5a7f437d83cff954bc321f1a9b181efd5 or later; apply the corresponding fixed packages for ansible on Ubuntu 16.04 (2.0.0.2-2ubuntu1.1) and Ubuntu 18.04 (2.5.1+dfsg-1) where applicable.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the running kernel contains commit 7f0d0dd5a7f437d83cff954bc321f1a9b181efd5; verify that xsk TX paths now free the skb on invalid metadata and that send-buffer exhaustion no longer occurs under the same descriptor patterns.
Typical attack path
- Obtain capability to post xsk descriptors (local or container context)
- Craft descriptors that set invalid TX metadata options on the initial fragment
- Submit descriptors repeatedly to trigger skb allocations without release
- Observe exhaustion of the send buffer and denial of further transmissions
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for repeated skb allocation warnings or xsk send-buffer exhaustion messages; correlate with processes using AF_XDP sockets and look for anomalous descriptor submission patterns from untrusted code paths.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on systems that expose AF_XDP sockets
- Monitor EPSS and KEV status for any change in exploit maturity
- Review container and host configurations that grant xsk access
- Test the fixed kernel version in a staging environment before broad rollout
The record
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: xsk: Free skb when TX metadata options are invalid When a new skb is allocated for transmitting an xsk descriptor, i.e., for every non-multibuf descriptor or the first frag of a multibuf descriptor, but the descriptor is later found to have invalid options set for the TX metadata, the new skb is never freed. This can leak skbs until the send buffer is full which makes sending more packets impossible. Fix this by freeing the skb in the error path if we are currently dealing with the first frag, i.e., an skb allocated in this iteration of xsk_build_skb.
